Understanding Growth Remnants: The Birthmarks of a Lab Diamond

In nature, diamonds form over billions of years, often trapping tiny fragments of other minerals inside, what we call inclusions. Lab diamonds develop a similar phenomenon in a fraction of the time, growing in a matter of weeks and developing their own distinct internal characteristics, growth remnants.

As a gemologist, I study these remnants at our Wembley showroom to ensure every stone selected has a genuinely crisp crystal structure and strong light performance.

HPHT Remnants: The Metallic Connection

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) diamonds grow within a molten metal flux, typically iron, nickel, or cobalt. Occasionally, microscopic droplets of that metal become trapped inside the growing crystal.

What they look like: under a loupe, these can appear as tiny, dark, metallic-looking points.

On the "luster" question: it's worth being precise rather than repeating an oversold claim, there's no well-established visual difference in luster or shine between HPHT and CVD diamonds to the naked eye. Both perform identically in brilliance and fire when well cut. What genuinely differs is internal, these metallic flux inclusions specifically, which we screen for carefully so they don't affect a stone's actual light performance, rather than treating HPHT as inherently more lustrous.

CVD Remnants: Carbon and Strain

CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) diamonds grow layer by layer from carbon-rich gas, and their remnants look genuinely different.

What they look like: occasional tiny pinpoints of non-diamond carbon (graphite), or subtle strain lines, internal graining left over from the rapid layer-by-layer growth process.

The cloudiness risk: if a CVD stone grows too quickly, it can develop a hazy or milky appearance. This is exactly why every stone in our ready-to-ship collection is vetted specifically for transparency and genuine eye-clean clarity before it's offered.

Why "Eye-Clean" Is the Actual Goal

For most engagement rings, the target isn't "Flawless," which carries a significant premium, it's eye-clean. That means a gemologist can identify growth remnants under 10x magnification, while they remain completely invisible to you or your partner's naked eye. That's genuinely the meaningful threshold for day-to-day beauty, not the top of the clarity scale.

The difference between a good lab diamond and a genuinely exceptional one often comes down to exactly these internal details. When working through a custom design together, I personally inspect a stone's cloudiness and tint to confirm it reflects light the way it should, not just that it meets a certificate's stated grade.
