The VYOR Diamond Lab Handmade Crafting Process
An engagement ring should reflect the intimacy of your specific story, not a mass-produced template. Every custom ring is handcrafted in Australia by skilled artisans, from first concept through to final polish. Here's what actually happens behind the scenes.
Step 1: It Starts With Your Story
The journey begins with you, whether you arrive with a clear vision or just scattered inspiration. During a private consultation, virtual or at our Wembley showroom, we work through:
- The stone, lab-grown diamond or moissanite
- The cut, oval, emerald, pear, or any shape that suits you
- The setting, solitaire, three-stone, hidden halo, or something entirely custom
- The metal, platinum, or 14K/18K yellow, white, or rose gold
Together, this shapes a design that's genuinely yours, not selected from a fixed catalogue.
Step 2: Custom CAD Design
Once your vision is clear, a detailed CAD model is built, a digital blueprint you can review from every angle before any metal work begins. Every CAD file is developed with real fabrication in mind, confirming accurate proportions, comfort-fit banding, precision claw prongs, and space for any hidden gemstones or engraving. Revisions continue until every detail matches what you actually pictured.
Step 3: The Setting Is Made
With the CAD design approved, skilled Australian jewellers bring the setting to life, shaping the band, forming baskets, bridges, and shoulders, and hand-finishing every surface for smooth curves and genuine symmetry. Claw prongs are sculpted individually rather than pulled from a generic mould, and proportions are checked down to a fraction of a millimetre throughout.
Step 4: Stone Setting by Skilled Hands
Once the structure is complete, a senior stone setter takes over, a genuinely delicate, unhurried step:
- Centre stones seated securely in individually shaped claw prongs
- Pavé stones hand-set one at a time using traditional technique
- Prongs shaped and polished to support both security and brilliance
- Every stone aligned for optimal symmetry and light performance
There are no real shortcuts available at this stage, the quality shows directly in how the ring wears and how it ultimately sparkles.
Step 5: Polishing and Quality Assurance
The final stage is meticulous hand-finishing:
- Every angle of the setting refined by hand
- Polished with fine compounds for a genuine mirror finish
- Inspected under magnification for any remaining imperfection
- A full stone security check and final quality inspection
The result is a ring built to represent a genuinely significant moment, and to last for generations afterward.
Why the Handmade Process Actually Matters
- Tailored, not generic. Every element is built around your specific design, not pulled from a standard mould.
- Real craftsmanship. Not rushed, not purely automated.
- A genuine emotional connection. Each ring carries real time and care, which is part of what makes it feel different from something bought off a shelf.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a handmade ring take?
Approximately 4 to 6 weeks from CAD approval, more complex designs may take somewhat longer.
Can hidden details like birthstones or engraving be included?
Absolutely, a hidden gemstone or inner engraving can both be incorporated into the design and setting process.
Is handmade more expensive than a standard cast piece?
Genuine craftsmanship is built into the process rather than added as a separate luxury markup, handmade here means more care taken, not a significantly higher price for the sake of it.
Do you use claw prongs across every design?
Yes, we use claw prongs exclusively, for both security and how much light they let reach the stone.
