Necklaces FAQ
What is a diamond pendant necklace?
A diamond pendant necklace features a single diamond (or a small group of diamonds) suspended from a chain, worn around the neck. The pendant typically hangs at a natural resting point at or near the chest, depending on chain length. Diamond pendants are among the most timeless and versatile pieces of fine jewellery, suitable for everyday wear, professional settings, formal occasions, and as gifts marking significant milestones. At VYOR, every pendant is custom made with the same quality standards as our engagement rings.
What is the difference between a pendant and a station necklace?
A pendant necklace features one prominent stone (or design element) hanging at a single point from the chain, typically at the centre. A station necklace features multiple smaller stones spaced at regular intervals along the chain, creating a continuous decorative effect rather than a single focal point. Station necklaces often complement a pendant or stand alone as a sparkling everyday piece. Both styles are available across the VYOR collection.
What is a tennis necklace?
A tennis necklace is a continuous line of diamonds (or moissanite) set around the entire perimeter of the necklace, creating a uninterrupted strand of stones that wraps around the neck. The name originates from professional tennis, where a player's diamond bracelet snapping mid match brought widespread attention to this style. Tennis necklaces are among the most statement pieces in fine jewellery and are typically chosen for special occasions, formal wear, and milestone gifts.
What chain types does VYOR offer?
VYOR offers four main chain types: cable chain (the most classic, with round or oval links), box chain (square section links producing a clean modern line), Singapore chain (twisted links creating subtle sparkle), and trace chain (small flat links with a refined contemporary look). Chain thickness ranges from 0.7 mm (delicate) to 1.5 mm (substantial). The right chain depends on the pendant weight, the design direction, and the wearer's everyday style.
What length necklace should I choose?
The four most common necklace lengths are: choker (35 to 40 cm, sitting at the base of the neck), princess (42 to 45 cm, the most popular standard length sitting at the collarbone), matinée (50 to 60 cm, falling between the collarbone and bust), and opera (70 to 90 cm, falling at or below the bust). 42 to 45 cm is the right starting point for most pendant necklaces and works with most necklines. Our designer guides each client through length considerations during consultation.
What carat weight should a pendant be?
For a solitaire diamond pendant intended for everyday wear, 0.30 to 0.50 carat is the most common range, producing visible presence without becoming a statement piece. For occasional wear or gift pieces, 0.75 to 1.50 carat produces more pronounced visual impact. For statement or milestone pieces, 2 carat and above is the appropriate range. Halo pendants and station necklaces accumulate total carat weight across multiple smaller stones rather than relying on a single centre.
Can VYOR design custom pendants?
Yes. Every VYOR necklace and pendant is custom made, with multiple customisation options including stone shape (round, oval, pear, emerald, cushion, marquise, princess, asscher, radiant), setting style (solitaire claw, bezel, halo, three stone), chain type, chain length, and metal. Our designer creates fully bespoke pendant designs for clients whose vision is not represented in the signature collection, with the same three to five week production timeframe as our engagement rings.
Are necklaces available in lab grown diamond and moissanite?
Yes. Every VYOR necklace and pendant is available in lab grown diamond (D to G colour, VS1 clarity and above, GIA or IGI certified) or D colour VVS1 clarity moissanite. The same quality standards apply to necklace stones as to our engagement ring centre stones. Moissanite pendants are particularly popular for clients seeking a larger statement stone within a particular budget while preserving the brilliance and durability of a premium gemstone.
Diamond necklaces and pendants are among the most versatile pieces in fine jewellery, suitable for daily wear, professional settings, formal occasions, and as gifts marking significant milestones. At VYOR, every necklace is custom designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.
Custom Diamond Necklaces and Pendants at VYOR
Our necklace and pendant collection covers solitaire pendants, halo pendants, three stone pendants, station necklaces, and tennis necklaces. Every signature design is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, across multiple stone shapes (round, oval, pear, emerald, cushion, and others), with chain options in cable, box, Singapore, or trace styles, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum.
If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom necklaces and pendants from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe as our engagement rings.
Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer
Every VYOR necklace is held to the same standards as our engagement rings. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every pendant stone personally, examining cut performance, inclusion placement, and colour grading to ensure each piece meets the VYOR quality floor (D to G colour, VS1 clarity and above for diamonds, or D VVS1 moissanite). Pendant stones are typically visible from a viewing distance, so cut performance under daylight matters as much as for an engagement ring centre.
Our designer, Nikolett, directs every necklace design in the studio. She works with each client on the pendant style, stone shape, setting type, chain choice, chain length, and overall composition. The right pendant is one that suits the wearer's everyday style, complements their neckline preferences, and produces the visual presence intended for the piece. How to Choose a Diamond Necklace or Pendant, A Designer's Guide
Five decisions our designer walks through on every necklace consultation at VYOR.
Pendant style
Solitaire (a single centre stone), halo (centre stone surrounded by pavé), three stone, bezel (modern frame around the stone), or station (multiple smaller stones spaced along the chain). Solitaire is the most timeless. Halo amplifies the visual size of the pendant. Bezel produces a sleek contemporary silhouette.
Stone shape
Round is the most classical and the most flexible. Oval produces a soft contemporary look. Pear pendants drop naturally with the point downward, producing an elegant teardrop silhouette. Emerald and cushion pendants produce more architectural shapes. Marquise pendants offer the most distinctive elongated outline.
Stone size
For everyday pendants, 0.30 to 0.50 carat is the most common range. For occasional or gift pieces, 0.75 to 1.50 carat produces more visible presence. For statement pieces, 2 carat and above. The pendant should be in proportion to the wearer's frame and the necklace length.
Chain
Cable chain is the most classical. Box chain produces a clean modern line. Singapore chain catches light along its length. Trace chain is delicate and refined. Chain thickness should be proportional to pendant weight: a 2 carat pendant needs a sturdier chain than a 0.30 carat pendant.
Length
35 to 40 cm chokers sit at the base of the neck. 42 to 45 cm princess length is the most popular and works with most necklines. 50 to 60 cm matinée falls between collarbone and bust. The right length depends on personal preference, neckline choices, and how the wearer typically pairs jewellery.
