The Best Ratios for Oval Cuts: Finding Your Perfect Silhouette
As we move through 2026, the Oval cut has officially become the most sought-after diamond shape at VYOR Diamond Lab. It’s easy to see why: ovals offer the brilliant sparkle of a round diamond but with an elongated shape that elegantly slims the finger and appears 10–15% larger than a round stone of the same carat weight.
However, ovals are "fancy shapes," meaning they aren't graded for cut quality on a certificate. To find a truly beautiful one, you need to understand two things: Ratio and the Bow-Tie Effect.
1. Finding Your "Sweet Spot" Ratio
The length-to-width (L/W) ratio determines if your oval looks "plump" or "skinny." You calculate this by dividing the length by the width.
-
1.30 – 1.35 (The Classic/Petite): These are slightly more rounded. They are perfect if you want a softer, vintage-inspired look or if you have shorter fingers and want a balanced appearance.
-
1.40 – 1.45 (The Universal Favourite): This is our "sweet spot" at VYOR. It provides the perfect balance of elongation and brilliance, suiting almost every hand shape.
-
1.50+ (The Modern Elongated): Very sleek and contemporary. These are excellent for "East-West" settings (set horizontally) or for those who want a very dramatic, finger-lengthening effect.
2. The Infamous "Bow-Tie" Effect
Because of how ovals are faceted, nearly all of them have a dark shadow across the centre that looks like a bow-tie.
-
A "Good" Bow-Tie: A faint shadow actually adds contrast and depth, making the diamond look three-dimensional.
-
A "Bad" Bow-Tie: A heavy, black shadow that kills the sparkle in the middle of the stone.
As a gemologist, I personally vet every stone in our ready-to-ship engagement rings to ensure the bow-tie is minimal and the light return is even across the entire stone.
3. Pro Tip: Consider the Metal
In 2026, we are seeing a huge trend toward Yellow Gold ovals. If you choose 18k Yellow Gold, you can often drop to a slightly warmer colour grade (like H or I), which looks stunning against the gold and allows you to put more of your budget into a larger carat weight.
See the Difference in Person
You can’t judge an oval by a certificate alone. You need to see how the light moves through it. We invite you to book a consultation at our Wembley showroom where we can show you a range of ratios side-by-side.
Whether you want a classic solitaire or are starting a custom jewellery design, we’ll help you find an oval that is perfectly proportioned for you.
