The Best Ratios for Oval Cuts: Finding Your Perfect Silhouette

Last updated July 2026

Oval has become the most sought-after diamond shape we work with. It's easy to see why: ovals carry the brilliant sparkle of a round diamond in an elongated silhouette that slims the finger and reads noticeably larger than a round stone of the same carat weight.

Because ovals are a fancy shape, they aren't universally graded for cut quality the way round brilliants are. To find a genuinely beautiful one, two things matter more than the certificate: ratio and the bow-tie effect.

1. Finding Your Sweet Spot Ratio

The length-to-width (L/W) ratio determines whether an oval reads as plump or slender, calculated by dividing length by width.

  • 1.30–1.35 (classic/petite) — slightly more rounded, well suited to a softer, vintage-leaning look, or to balance a shorter finger
  • 1.40–1.45 (the universal favourite) — our own sweet spot, the most balanced combination of elongation and brilliance, suiting the widest range of hand shapes
  • 1.50+ (modern elongated) — sleek and contemporary, particularly striking in east-west settings or for a more dramatic, finger-lengthening effect

2. The Bow-Tie Effect, Explained Honestly

Due to how ovals are faceted, nearly every one shows some degree of a dark shadow across the centre, resembling a bow tie.

A good bow tie: a faint shadow that genuinely adds contrast and depth, giving the stone a more three-dimensional read.

A bad bow tie: a heavy, dark shadow that visibly dulls the centre of the stone and undercuts its overall sparkle.

Every stone in our ready-to-ship engagement rings is personally vetted for a minimal bow tie and even light return across the whole stone, this is genuinely one detail a certificate alone won't tell you.

3. A Practical Tip: Consider the Metal

Yellow gold ovals have genuinely surged in popularity recently. Choosing 18K yellow gold often means you can comfortably drop to a slightly warmer colour grade, H or I, for instance, which reads beautifully against the gold's own warmth and frees up more of your budget for a larger carat weight instead.

See the Difference in Person

A certificate alone can't show you how light actually moves through an oval. We invite you to book a consultation at our Wembley showroom to compare a genuine range of ratios side by side.

Whether you want a classic solitaire or a fully custom design, book a consultation, and we'll help you find an oval proportioned exactly right for you.
