Wedding Rings FAQ
What is a wedding ring?
A wedding ring is a ring traditionally exchanged between partners during a wedding ceremony, symbolising marriage commitment. Wedding rings are typically simpler in design than engagement rings, focusing on the band itself rather than a prominent centre stone. The ring is worn continuously on the fourth finger of the left hand in most Western traditions, often alongside the engagement ring. Wedding rings have been part of marriage ceremonies for thousands of years, and the modern Western wedding ring tradition dates to at least the medieval period.
What is the difference between an engagement ring and a wedding ring?
An engagement ring is given at the moment of a marriage proposal, typically featuring a prominent centre stone. A wedding ring is exchanged during the wedding ceremony itself, typically simpler in design and made to sit alongside the engagement ring on the same finger. In many traditions, the wedding ring is worn closer to the heart (the lower position on the finger), with the engagement ring placed above it. Both rings together form the bridal stack worn throughout marriage.
What are the most popular women's wedding ring styles?
The four most popular women's wedding ring styles at VYOR are plain bands (a smooth metal band with no stones), pavé bands (a band with small diamonds set along the top half or all the way around), eternity bands (a band with diamonds set continuously around the entire perimeter), and half eternity bands (a band with diamonds set along the top half only). Curved or contoured wedding bands designed to sit flush against a specific engagement ring are also a major category, particularly for halo, hidden halo, or cathedral engagement rings.
How do I match my wedding ring to my engagement ring?
The wedding ring should sit cleanly against the engagement ring without gaps or interference. The two main considerations are profile (whether the engagement ring requires a curved or contoured wedding band to sit flush) and aesthetic match (the metals, finish, and overall design language should coordinate). For halo and hidden halo engagement rings, a contoured wedding band is usually required. For solitaires, almost any wedding ring style works. Our designer creates matching wedding rings to pair with any VYOR engagement ring during the consultation.
What is an eternity ring vs a half eternity?
An eternity ring features diamonds set continuously around the entire perimeter of the band, with no plain metal showing. A half eternity ring features diamonds along the top half of the band only, with the back of the band remaining plain metal. Eternity rings offer maximum sparkle and are visually impressive from every angle, but cannot be resized after manufacturing (the diamonds occupy the resizing area). Half eternity rings allow resizing if needed and are equally popular as wedding bands.
What metal should I choose for my wedding ring?
The wedding ring metal should match or coordinate with your engagement ring. If your engagement ring is platinum, your wedding ring should be platinum (the two metals will wear evenly against each other). The same applies for white gold, yellow gold, or rose gold. Two tone wedding rings can pair with two tone engagement rings or provide deliberate contrast with single metal engagement rings. Our designer walks each client through the metal coordination during consultation.
How wide should a women's wedding ring be?
Most women's wedding rings sit between 1.8 mm and 2.5 mm wide. Thinner bands (1.5 mm or under) read as delicate and pair best with delicate engagement rings. Standard bands (2 to 2.2 mm) suit the majority of engagement ring styles. Wider bands (2.5 to 3 mm) read as more substantial and pair with larger or more architectural engagement rings. The width should be in visual proportion to the engagement ring and to the wearer's finger.
Can VYOR make a wedding ring to match my engagement ring?
Yes. Every VYOR wedding ring is custom made and can be designed to pair specifically with any engagement ring, whether the engagement ring is from VYOR or from another jeweller. Our designer works from the engagement ring directly during consultation, designing the wedding ring to sit flush against the centre setting, match the metal and finish, and coordinate with the overall design language. The same three to five week production timeframe applies to wedding rings.

The wedding ring is the most worn piece of jewellery a woman will ever own, exchanged during the marriage ceremony and worn continuously through every day of married life. At VYOR, every wedding ring is custom designed in Perth by our designer, finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers, and crafted to pair specifically with the wearer's engagement ring.
Custom Women's Wedding Rings at VYOR
A wedding ring is more than a complementary piece to an engagement ring; it is the ring that marks the wedding itself. At VYOR we treat every wedding ring as a custom design, working from the engagement ring to ensure perfect coordination of profile, metal, finish, and design language. Whether your wedding ring is a smooth plain band, a delicate pavé, a full eternity statement, or a custom contoured design fitted to your engagement ring, the same attention is given to every element.
Our women's wedding ring collection covers every major style: plain bands, pavé bands (half and full pavé), eternity rings, half eternity rings, contoured curved bands for halo and hidden halo engagement rings, vintage inspired milgrain designs, and bespoke custom configurations. Every design is available in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum, and diamond featuring bands are available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite.
Designed by Our Designer
Our designer, Nikolett, directs every wedding ring design in the studio. She works with each client on the style choice (plain, pavé, eternity, contoured), the metal coordination with the engagement ring, the width and profile, the finish (polished, matte, brushed), and the overall design language that ties the wedding ring to the engagement ring as a unified bridal stack.
For diamond featuring wedding rings, our gemologist, Joseph, oversees the colour and clarity matching of the accent stones, ensuring they meet the same VYOR quality floor (G colour and above, VS1 clarity and above) as our engagement ring accent stones. How to Choose a Women's Wedding Ring, A Designer's Guide
Wedding ring design is fundamentally about coordination with the engagement ring and the wearer. Five things our designer walks through on every wedding ring consultation at VYOR.
Style choice
Plain band, pavé band, eternity, half eternity, or contoured curved band. Plain bands are the most timeless and the most flexible. Pavé bands add continuous sparkle and pair with most engagement ring styles. Eternity bands produce maximum brilliance but cannot be resized. Half eternity bands balance sparkle with resizing flexibility. Contoured bands are required for some engagement ring profiles (particularly halo and hidden halo designs) to sit flush against the engagement ring.
Engagement ring coordination
The wedding ring must sit cleanly against the engagement ring with no gaps. For solitaire engagement rings, almost any wedding ring profile works. For halo, hidden halo, and cathedral engagement rings, a contoured or curved wedding band may be required. Our designer works from the engagement ring directly to confirm the required profile.
Metal
The wedding ring metal should match the engagement ring metal to ensure even wear over time. Platinum pairs with platinum, 18k white gold pairs with white gold, yellow gold pairs with yellow gold, rose gold pairs with rose gold. Two tone wedding rings can pair with two tone or single metal engagement rings depending on design intent.
Width and profile
Most women's wedding rings sit between 1.8 mm and 2.5 mm wide. The width should be in proportion to the engagement ring and the wearer's finger. The profile (flat, low dome, comfort fit) affects how the ring sits and wears. Comfort fit profiles round the inside of the band for everyday comfort and are recommended for rings worn continuously.
Finish
Polished, matte, brushed, or hammered finishes each produce a distinct character. Polished is the most traditional and pairs with most engagement rings. Matte and brushed read as more contemporary. The wedding ring finish should match or deliberately complement the engagement ring finish.
These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation.
