Two tone FAQs
What is a two tone engagement ring?
A two tone engagement ring combines two different precious metal colours within a single ring design. Different elements of the ring are crafted in different metals, creating intentional visual contrast between the centre setting, the band, the prongs, and other design features. The most common two tone combinations are white metal (platinum or white gold) with yellow gold, white metal with rose gold, and yellow gold with rose gold. Two tone has been part of fine jewellery design for over a century and has experienced a major modern revival as one of the most distinctive contemporary engagement ring choices.
What are the most popular two tone metal combinations?
Three combinations dominate two tone engagement ring design. White and yellow (platinum or white gold band with yellow gold accents, or vice versa) is the most classical and the most popular, producing strong contrast and timeless appeal. White and rose (platinum or white gold with rose gold accents) produces a particularly romantic, contemporary look that has grown rapidly in popularity. Yellow and rose (yellow gold band with rose gold accents, or vice versa) produces a warm, distinctive aesthetic with subtle contrast. Three tone designs combining all three metals are also available on custom designs.
Why choose a two tone engagement ring over a single metal design?
Two tone offers four advantages. First, it produces a more distinctive, custom looking ring that does not look like most others. Second, it pairs more flexibly with existing jewellery: a two tone ring matches both yellow gold and white gold pieces simultaneously. Third, it offers visual interest and design complexity without requiring additional gemstones. Fourth, it allows the wearer to enjoy two preferred metals in a single ring without choosing between them. Many clients who could not decide between yellow gold and white gold choose two tone to have both.
Does a two tone engagement ring match white or yellow gold jewellery better?
Both. This is one of the main practical advantages of two tone. A ring combining white and yellow elements pairs comfortably with bracelets, earrings, or necklaces in either metal, and looks intentional alongside whichever choice the wearer makes for other jewellery. Many clients choose two tone specifically because they own jewellery in both metal families and want an engagement ring that does not look mismatched with either.
Are two tone engagement rings more expensive than single metal?
Slightly. Two tone designs require additional craftsmanship to integrate two metals into a single piece, including welding, soldering, and finishing each metal separately. The price premium is typically 10 to 15% above an equivalent single metal design. The additional cost reflects the additional design and manufacturing complexity, not a premium for marketing positioning. Many clients consider the additional cost well justified for the visual distinctiveness of the finished ring.
Can two tone engagement rings be paired with any centre stone shape?
Yes. Two tone works with every diamond shape and every setting style. Round, oval, cushion, emerald, princess, pear, marquise, asscher, and elongated cushion centres all work in two tone settings. The two tone effect can be applied to the prongs (different metal from the band), the gallery (the underside of the centre setting), the band itself (split metal bands), the halo (different metal from the centre setting), or any combination of these. Our designer guides each client through the two tone elements that best suit their chosen centre stone and design direction.
Will the two metals wear differently over time?
Slightly. Different precious metals have different hardness and patina characteristics. Platinum develops a soft matte patina over time that many clients prefer to its initial polish. 18k gold (white, yellow, or rose) maintains its colour but can develop fine surface scratches with daily wear. White gold may require occasional rhodium replating to maintain its bright white appearance, while yellow and rose gold do not. We include complimentary lifetime polishing and metal inspection on every VYOR two tone engagement ring, with white gold rhodium replating available at cost when needed.
Does VYOR offer two tone engagement rings in moissanite?
Yes. Every VYOR two tone design is available with the centre stone in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Two tone moissanite is particularly popular for clients seeking a distinctive engagement ring with maximum visual presence and a generous centre stone within budget.
Two tone is one of the most distinctive and versatile choices in modern engagement ring design, combining two precious metals within a single piece for visual contrast and personalised character. At VYOR, every two tone engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.
Custom Two Tone Engagement Rings at VYOR
Two tone is the engagement ring style of personalised contrast. By combining two metal colours within a single ring, the two tone design produces a piece that reads as more considered and more personal than a single metal design. It is the choice of clients who appreciate craftsmanship details and want a ring that does not look like everyone else's, particularly those who own jewellery in multiple metal colours and want their engagement ring to coordinate with both.
Every signature two tone design in our collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in any diamond shape, with multiple metal combinations, and in any compatible setting style (solitaire, halo, hidden halo, trilogy, pavé). If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom two tone engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.
Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer
Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified diamond destined for a two tone setting personally. Two tone affects how the stone reads against its setting: a white metal head with a yellow gold band shows the diamond against a cool backdrop directly around the stone, while a yellow gold head with a white metal band shows it against warm contrast. Joseph and the client discuss this interaction during stone selection.
Our designer, Nikolett, directs every two tone design decision in the studio. She works with you on the metal combination (white plus yellow, white plus rose, yellow plus rose, or three tone), the placement of each metal (which elements receive which colour), the visual proportion between the two metals, and the overall design direction. The right two tone is one where the metal placement looks intentional and deliberate rather than random.

How to Choose a Two Tone Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide
Two tone design is fundamentally about deliberate composition between two materials. Five things our designer walks through on every two tone consultation at VYOR.
Metal combination
White and yellow is the most classical combination, producing strong contrast and timeless appeal. White and rose produces a contemporary, romantic look. Yellow and rose produces a warm aesthetic with subtle contrast. Three tone (combining all three metals) is also available on custom designs for clients seeking maximum complexity. The choice depends on personal preference and the existing jewellery the wearer owns.
Metal placement
Where each metal sits significantly affects how the ring reads. Common placement options include white prongs with yellow band, yellow prongs with white band, white head with rose gold band, two tone halo (one metal for the halo and another for the centre setting), two tone band (split metals along the band length), and gallery accents (one metal for the underside visible from the side profile). Our designer guides each client toward the placement that suits their stone and the overall design direction.
Stone shape
Every shape works in two tone. Round and oval two tone designs produce clean curved contrast. Emerald and asscher two tone produces angular geometric contrast. Princess and cushion two tone delivers a balance between geometric and curved. Pear and marquise two tone can use the contrasting metal at the points for V claw protection that doubles as a visual feature.
Visual proportion
The two metals should be balanced within the design. A small amount of contrast metal (such as yellow gold prongs on a white gold ring) reads as a refined accent. Roughly equal amounts of each metal (such as a half white, half yellow split band) reads as a fully two tone statement. The proportion decision affects how distinctively two tone the finished ring reads.
Lifestyle and wear
Different metals wear differently. White gold may require occasional rhodium replating. Platinum develops a soft patina over time. Yellow and rose gold maintain their colour with normal wear. For clients combining a softer metal like high karat gold with platinum, the visual contrast may shift subtly over decades. Our designer walks through these considerations during consultation so clients choose with full understanding.
These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Two tone rewards careful design composition.
The VYOR Process
Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.
Consultation
A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Our gemologist walks through stone options with attention to how the stone reads against contrasting metal backdrops. Our designer discusses metal combination, placement, proportion, and lifestyle considerations. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.
Design
Once your stone, metals, and design direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element (metal placement, band proportion, finish, setting style) before crafting begins.
Crafting
Your ring is finished in Perth by our team of senior master jewellers, using 100% recycled gold and platinum across both metal components.
