Princess Cut FAQs

What is a princess cut diamond?

A princess cut is a square (or slightly rectangular) brilliant-cut diamond, characterised by sharp corners and a chevron-pattern facet arrangement on the pavilion. It was developed in the 1960s and is currently the second most popular shape for engagement rings worldwide, after the round brilliant. Princess cuts retain more brilliance per carat than emerald or asscher cuts (which are step-cut, not brilliant-cut), making them an excellent choice for those who want the geometry of a square shape with the fire of a round.

How does a princess cut compare to a round brilliant?

A princess cut and a round brilliant share similar light performance, both are brilliant-cut, with comparable fire and scintillation. The differences are aesthetic and economic. Aesthetically, princess delivers a more contemporary, geometric look while round is more traditional. Economically, princess typically costs 25–35% less per carat than round brilliant because cutting from rough is more efficient roughly 60% of rough is retained in a princess cut versus around 40% in a round. This means the same budget can buy a noticeably larger princess.

What setting style works best for a princess cut engagement ring?

V-prong (also called chevron prong) settings are the standard for princess cuts because they cradle and protect the four vulnerable corners. Four-prong claw settings can work well if the prongs cover the corners directly, but standard claw settings with prongs on the long edges leave the corners exposed and are not recommended for daily wear. Bezel settings also protect the corners and produce a particularly modern silhouette. Three stone settings with princess side stones, hidden halos, and channel-set band designs all work beautifully with princess centres.

What colour and clarity grade should I look for in a princess cut?

For a white metal setting (platinum or white gold), we recommend F colour or higher. Princess cuts show colour at their corners more than round brilliants, so going below H in a white setting can produce a faintly warm cast. For yellow or rose gold, over G is the practical recommendation. On clarity, VS1 is generally safe but inclusion placement matters as much as the grade. Princess cut corners act as small magnifying lenses, so visible inclusions near the corners are more apparent than the same inclusion under a crown facet. Joseph reviews inclusion plots on every stone before presenting.

How long does it take to make a custom princess cut engagement ring at VYOR?

Most VYOR custom princess cut engagement rings are designed, crafted, and delivered within three to five weeks of design approval, faster than the standard Australian timeframe of six to eight weeks. For clients who need a ring sooner, our Ready to Ship collection includes selected princess cut designs that dispatch from Perth within one to three business days.

Can I have a princess cut engagement ring in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR design is available in lab grown diamond or premium D/VVS1 moissanite. Princess cut moissanite is an excellent choice for those seeking a larger stone within a particular budget, moissanite typically costs 70–85% less than a lab grown diamond of equivalent size, with comparable optical performance to the naked eye. Joseph and Nicole will walk through the visual and gemological differences during your consultation so you can make the choice on full information.

Do you offer princess cut three stone, halo, or toi et moi settings?

Yes. Our collection includes princess cut designs across solitaire, three stone (princess centre with princess or trapezoid side stones), hidden halo, bezel, east-west, and toi et moi settings. All are fully customisable in lab grown diamond or moissanite and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. If you have a princess cut design in mind that isn't in our collection, Joseph and Nicole will design it from scratch with you.

Does VYOR ship princess cut engagement rings Australia-wide?

Yes. Every VYOR order ships free, fully insured, by express courier with signature on delivery to any Australian address. Standard delivery to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide is two to five business days. For interstate clients who would like a consultation before ordering, our private virtual consultation by secure video offers the same experience as visiting the Wembley showroom in person.

Custom Princess Cut Engagement Rings at VYOR

The princess cut is the second most popular engagement ring shape in the world, and the one that rewards expert selection more than almost any other. At VYOR, every princess cut engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a hand-selected GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond or premium D/VVS1 moissanite, and hand-finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Princess Cut Engagement Rings at VYOR

The princess cut delivers the geometric modernity of an emerald cut with the brilliance of a round brilliant, a square (or near-square) silhouette with chevron-patterned facets that produce strong fire and scintillation. Developed in the 1960s, it remains the most popular non-round shape for engagement rings globally, and a particular favourite among clients seeking a contemporary, architectural aesthetic without trading away light performance. Every signature design in our princess cut collection is available in lab grown diamond or moissanite, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. If your vision doesn't fit one of our existing designs, Joseph and Nicole will design a custom princess cut engagement ring from scratch alongside you, with the same three-to-five week delivery timeframe.

Designed by Joseph and Nikolett

Every VYOR princess cut consultation is led personally by Joseph or Nikolett, both qualified gemologists and designers. Princess cut selection is one of the most technical shape decisions in fine jewellery, proportions vary far more widely than for round brilliants, and small differences in depth, corner geometry, and inclusion placement change how the stone wears, sparkles, and ages.

Joseph reviews every shortlisted princess cut diamond personally before it is presented to a client, looking at corner facets under the loupe, evaluating depth percentage against face-up size, and confirming the cut produces real fire under daylight, not only under gallery lighting. How to Choose a Princess Cut Diamond: A Designer's Guide

Princess cut is the trickiest diamond shape to buy well, because the major certification institutes (GIA, IGI) do not assign an overall cut grade to princess cuts the way they do for rounds. The certificate tells you carat, colour, clarity, polish, and symmetry, but not the all-important cut quality. That is where gemological judgement matters most. Five things we look at on every princess cut at VYOR:

Depth percentage

A well-cut princess sits at 65–75% depth. Above 78%, the stone hides its weight inside the ring rather than face-up, a 1.50ct stone can look like a 1.20ct in person. Below 64%, the stone can read glassy and lose contrast. Most poorly-cut princesses sold online are too deep: they grade well on paper but disappoint in real wear.

Length-to-width ratio

A true square princess is 1.00–1.05. Above 1.10 it begins to read rectangular, which is a different aesthetic, neither right nor wrong, but worth choosing deliberately rather than ending up with by accident.

Corner protection

Princess corners are the most vulnerable points on any diamond shape, capable of chipping if struck against a hard surface. We strongly recommend V-prong (also called chevron prong) settings, or four-prong claw settings with prongs that cradle the corners directly. Standard claw settings with prongs on the long edges leave the corners exposed and are not recommended for daily wear. Bezel settings also protect the corners and produce a particularly modern silhouette.

Colour grade

Princess cuts show colour in the corner facets more than round brilliants do, because corner facets retain more light without dispersing it across the stone. We recommend G colour or higher for white metals (platinum, white gold), and H or higher for yellow or rose gold settings where colour contrast is more visible. Below H in a white setting, the corners can read faintly warm.

Clarity placement

A princess cut can carry an VS2 inclusion gracefully if the inclusion sits under a crown facet rather than near a corner. Inclusions near the corners are more visible because the corner facets act as small magnifying lenses. We review the inclusion plot on every stone before presenting to a client, clarity grade alone is not enough information for princess cut.

These are the considerations we walk through in every consultation. The certificate is the starting point, not the conclusion.

The VYOR Process

Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four-stage process.

Consultation

A private 45-minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30-minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet directly with Joseph or Nikolett. We review your design direction, discuss the choices specific to princess cut, and present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.

Design

Once your stone and setting are confirmed, we produce a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element, band width, stone height, corner-protection prong style, finish, before crafting begins.

Crafting

Your ring is hand-finished in Perth by our team of senior master jewellers, using 100% recycled gold or platinum. Most custom princess cut engagement rings are completed within three to five weeks of design approval, faster than the Australian industry standard of six to eight weeks.

Delivery

Your finished ring is presented in person at the Wembley showroom, or dispatched anywhere in Australia by fully insured express courier with signature on delivery.

Why Choose VYOR for Your Princess Cut Engagement Ring

There are several places in Australia to buy a princess cut engagement ring. VYOR is different in three specific ways that matter most for this category.

First, every consultation is led personally by the designers, not by a sales team. Joseph and Nikolett both consult one-on-one. Because princess cut requires more gemological judgement than almost any other shape, this matters more for this category than for most.

Second, VYOR holds direct access to over 1.1 million GIA and IGI certified lab grown diamonds, substantially deeper than the in-house ranges most Australian jewellers offer. For a stone as technical as princess cut, where small differences in proportion and corner geometry produce a meaningfully different finished ring, the depth of selection genuinely changes the outcome.

Third, every ring is designed and crafted in Perth using 100% recycled gold and platinum, with most custom princess cut engagement rings delivered within three to five weeks of design approval. No mass production, no offshore finishing, no surprise delays.
