Split Shank FAQs

What is a split shank engagement ring?

A split shank engagement ring features a band that splits into two (or occasionally three) separate strands of metal as it approaches the centre stone. The split typically begins at the back of the band and widens as it travels up the shoulders of the ring, framing the centre stone setting with two parallel or curved bands. Split shank produces a distinctive silhouette that increases the visual presence of the ring without requiring a larger centre stone, and adds opportunities for pavé, two tone, or other decorative elements along the split portion of the band.

Why choose a split shank design?

Split shank offers three advantages over a single band design. First, it produces greater visual presence and a more substantial silhouette without requiring a larger centre stone. Second, it provides more surface area for pavé, two tone metals, or decorative details. Third, the split creates an elegant frame around the centre stone setting that draws attention to the diamond. Split shank is particularly popular for clients seeking a statement engagement ring with visible design complexity beyond the centre stone alone.

What is the difference between split shank and bypass setting?

The two are related but distinct. Split shank features a band that splits into two strands running parallel toward the centre stone, with both strands meeting at the centre setting. A bypass setting features a band where the two ends of the band do not meet, instead passing alongside the centre stone in opposing directions to create an asymmetric silhouette. Split shank reads as more symmetrical and traditional; bypass reads as more asymmetric and contemporary. Both are distinctive design choices.

Can split shank bands have pavé?

Yes. Split shank with pavé is one of the most popular configurations and one of the most effective uses of the design. Both split shanks can be pavé set (effectively doubling the pavé carat weight along the band compared to a single pavé band), or one shank can be pavé set while the other remains plain for visual contrast. Split shank with pavé adds significant total carat weight (commonly 0.30 to 0.60 carat across both shanks) and produces a particularly luxurious silhouette.

Are split shank rings more difficult to resize?

Slightly. Because the band splits before reaching the centre, the back of the band (which is the standard resizing area) is plain and can be resized normally. However, the split portion cannot be resized through, so significant size changes may require partial reconstruction of the split section. We recommend confirming ring size carefully before final crafting, and every VYOR engagement ring includes complimentary resizing within the first 60 days regardless of setting style. Our master jewellers in Perth handle all VYOR split shank resizing in house.

Which centre stones suit split shank designs?

Split shank works with every diamond shape but produces particularly striking effects with larger centre stones. Round and oval centres in split shank read as classical and elegant. Cushion and emerald centres in split shank read as architectural and contemporary. Princess and radiant centres in split shank produce a particularly geometric silhouette. Pear and marquise centres in split shank can use the split itself to frame the points for both visual interest and structural protection. The centre stone size should be in proportion to the visual weight of the split shank.

How does split shank compare to a cathedral setting?

The two are different design choices that can be combined. A cathedral lifts the centre stone above the band on two arched supports. A split shank splits the band itself into two strands before reaching the centre stone. Cathedral and split shank can be combined into a cathedral split shank design, where the band splits and the resulting strands curve upward to lift the centre stone in a cathedral profile. This combination produces one of the most visually substantial engagement ring designs and is available on request as a custom design.

Does VYOR offer split shank engagement rings in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR split shank design is available with the centre stone in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. The pavé accent stones (if the split shanks include pavé) are typically lab grown diamond for optical consistency. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Split shank moissanite is particularly popular for clients seeking maximum visual presence in their engagement ring within a particular budget.

The split shank is one of the most distinctive and visually substantial engagement ring designs in modern fine jewellery, replacing a single band with two parallel strands that frame the centre stone in elegant symmetry. At VYOR, every split shank engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Split Shank Engagement Rings at VYOR

Split shank is the engagement ring style of architectural presence. By splitting the band into two strands before reaching the centre stone, the split shank produces a silhouette that reads as significantly more substantial than a single band design, with additional surface area for pavé, two tone, or decorative finishing. It is the choice of clients who want maximum visual presence and design complexity in their engagement ring.

Every signature split shank design in our collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in any centre stone shape, with plain or pavé split options, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. Combinations with halo, hidden halo, cathedral profile, and two tone metals are all represented. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom split shank engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified diamond destined for a split shank setting personally. The visually substantial split shank silhouette suits larger centre stones particularly well, and Joseph helps clients calibrate the centre stone size relative to the split shank proportions during consultation. Stone selection follows the same VYOR quality floor as every other setting style: D to G colour, VS1 clarity and above for lab grown diamond, D VVS1 only for moissanite.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every split shank design decision in the studio. She works with you on the split point (where the band splits, near the centre or further down), the split style (parallel or curved), the pavé treatment (plain shanks, one pavé and one plain, or both pavé), the integration with the centre stone setting, and the metal choice. The right split shank is one where the architecture supports the centre stone rather than overwhelming it.

How to Choose a Split Shank Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide

Split shank design is a study in architectural proportion. Five things our designer walks through on every split shank consultation at VYOR.

Split point

The point at which the band splits determines how much of the band is split versus single. A late split (close to the centre stone) keeps most of the band single and adds split detail only at the top. An early split (further down the band) produces a fully split shank silhouette with more visual presence. Most VYOR split shanks split approximately one third of the way up from the back of the band.

Split style

Parallel split shanks (both strands running parallel to each other) read as most modern and architectural. Curved or tapered split shanks (where the strands widen or narrow as they approach the centre) read as more flowing and contemporary. The split style should match the overall design direction.

Pavé treatment

Plain split shanks (both strands plain metal) produce a clean, architectural silhouette. Pavé split shanks (both strands with pavé) produce maximum sparkle and visual luxury. One pavé and one plain produces a deliberate asymmetric design that has grown in popularity. The pavé decision adds significant total carat weight if both shanks are pavé set.

Centre stone integration

The split shanks must integrate cleanly with the centre stone setting. The shanks can meet at the centre setting in a simple junction, or curve up and over the centre to create a more architectural cradle for the stone. Split shank also pairs beautifully with halo or hidden halo setting at the centre, with the halo replacing the simple junction between the two shanks.

Metal choice

Split shank works in all metals. Two tone split shank (one strand in one metal, the other in a contrasting metal) is one of the most distinctive applications of two tone design and is particularly striking. Single metal split shank in platinum or white gold produces a clean architectural silhouette. Yellow or rose gold split shank produces a warmer, more romantic effect.

These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Split shank rewards considered architectural proportion at every level of the design.

The VYOR Process

Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.

Consultation

A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Our gemologist walks through stone options with attention to centre stone size relative to split shank proportion. Our designer discusses split point, split style, pavé treatment, centre integration, and metal choice. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.

Design

Once your stone and setting direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element (split point and style, pavé treatment, centre setting, band width, finish, metal) before crafting begins.
