Pavé Engagement Ring FAQ
What is a pavé engagement ring?
A pavé engagement ring features small diamonds (typically between 0.01 and 0.05 carat each) set closely together along the band, the gallery, or around the centre stone. The word pavé means "paved" in French, referring to how the small stones cover the metal in a continuous diamond surface, similar to paving stones. Pavé adds significant total carat weight to the ring (commonly 0.20 to 0.50 carat of additional diamonds across the band) and produces a continuous sparkle effect along the finger. Pavé is one of the most popular accent techniques in modern engagement ring design and can be combined with virtually every centre stone style.
What is the difference between pavé and micro pavé?
The difference is the size of the small diamonds and the precision of the setting work. Standard pavé uses diamonds approximately 0.01 to 0.05 carat each, set with small prongs visible between the stones. Micro pavé uses smaller diamonds (typically 0.005 to 0.01 carat each), set with even smaller, nearly invisible prongs that create the impression of an unbroken diamond surface. Micro pavé requires significantly more skilled setting work and produces a more refined, continuous sparkle effect. Both styles are available across the VYOR collection.
What is U pavé or shared prong pavé?
U pavé (also called shared prong pavé) is a pavé style in which each prong holds two adjacent diamonds rather than one, creating a U shaped channel between the stones. The result is more diamond visibility, less metal showing between the stones, and a particularly intense sparkle effect. U pavé requires precise stone matching for size and depth to ensure the stones sit cleanly side by side. It is one of the most popular pavé styles for clients seeking maximum sparkle in the accent stones.
Do the small diamonds in a pavé band fall out easily?
Properly crafted pavé is highly durable. Each small diamond is held securely by two or three prongs, and the setting is designed to withstand decades of daily wear. However, pavé bands do require more care than plain bands, since small stones can become loose over time if the prongs are bumped or worn down. We recommend annual prong inspection at the Wembley showroom (or via insured post for interstate clients), which is complimentary for the lifetime of any VYOR engagement ring. Our master jewellers in Perth handle any pavé tightening or restoration work in house.
Can a pavé ring be resized?
Yes, but with limitations. The pavé section of the band cannot be sized through, since this would disturb the stones. Resizing is achieved by either adding or removing metal at the back of the band (the section opposite the centre stone), which is plain metal in most pavé designs. Significant size changes (more than two sizes up or down) can require partial reconstruction of the pavé section. We recommend confirming ring size carefully before final crafting, and every VYOR engagement ring includes complimentary resizing within the first 60 days regardless of setting style.
How much total carat weight does pavé typically add to a ring?
A typical half pavé band (with pavé along the top half of the band, plain metal at the back) adds 0.15 to 0.25 carat total weight. A full pavé band (with pavé around the entire band) adds 0.30 to 0.50 carat. A pavé hidden halo (pavé tucked beneath the centre stone) adds an additional 0.10 to 0.20 carat. The total additional carat weight depends on band width, stone size, and pavé coverage. Our designer walks each client through the carat weight implications during the consultation.
What metal works best for pavé?
Pavé works in all metals, but white metals (platinum and 18k white gold) are the most popular because they allow the diamonds to read most clearly as the dominant visual element. Yellow gold pavé produces a warm, vintage inflected look with stronger contrast between the metal and the stones. Rose gold pavé produces a romantic, distinctive look that has grown in popularity for modern engagement rings. Two tone pavé designs (yellow gold band with white gold pavé settings, or platinum centre with rose gold pavé band) are also available on custom designs.
Does VYOR offer pavé engagement rings in moissanite?
Yes. Every VYOR pavé design is available with the centre stone in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. The pavé accent stones are typically lab grown diamond for optical consistency and durability, though full moissanite pavé designs (with moissanite in both the centre and the pavé band) are available on request. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers.
The pavé technique is one of the most refined accent methods in fine jewellery, lining the band with small diamonds for continuous sparkle. At VYOR, every pavé engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond centre personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.
Custom Pavé Engagement Rings at VYOR
Pavé is the engagement ring style of continuous brilliance. By lining the band with small diamonds set close together, the pavé band produces a sparkle that extends along the finger rather than concentrating entirely at the centre stone. It is one of the most popular accent techniques in modern engagement ring design and combines beautifully with solitaire, halo, hidden halo, and trilogy configurations.
Every signature pavé design in our collection features the centre stone available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, with pavé accent stones in lab grown diamond, and is available in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. Standard pavé, micro pavé, and U pavé styles are all represented. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom pavé engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified centre diamond destined for a pavé setting personally, and oversees the colour and clarity matching of the pavé accent stones to ensure the entire ring reads as a unified composition. Pavé accent diamonds receive the same VYOR quality floor as larger stones (G colour or higher and VS1 clarity or higher), which is significantly above the industry standard for accent stones and produces a noticeably brighter pavé than rings using lower grade accent diamonds.
Our designer, Nikolett, directs every pavé design decision in the studio. She works with you on the pavé style (standard, micro, or U pavé), the coverage area (half pavé, full pavé, hidden halo pavé, gallery pavé), the band width and proportions, the centre stone setting integration, and the metal choice. The right pavé is one where the accent stones support the centre stone without overwhelming the overall composition.

How to Choose a Pavé Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide
Pavé design is more nuanced than it first appears. Small differences in pavé style, coverage, and proportion produce dramatically different finished rings. Five things our designer walks through on every pavé consultation at VYOR.
Pavé style
Standard pavé, micro pavé, or U pavé. Standard pavé uses 0.01 to 0.05 carat stones with visible prongs between them, producing distinct individual sparkle points. Micro pavé uses smaller stones with nearly invisible prongs, producing a continuous, refined sparkle surface. U pavé (shared prong) uses larger stones with shared prongs, producing maximum stone visibility and intense sparkle.
Coverage area
Half pavé (pavé along the top half of the band, plain at the back), full pavé (pavé around the entire band), hidden halo pavé (pavé tucked beneath the centre stone, visible only from the side), or gallery pavé (pavé on the inside surfaces visible from the side profile). Many designs combine multiple pavé areas, such as full band pavé with hidden halo pavé, for layered sparkle.
Band width and proportion
Wider bands accommodate more rows of pavé (double row or triple row pavé) but require larger pavé stones for visual proportion. Thinner bands favour single row micro pavé for delicate elegance. The band width and pavé style should match the proportions of the centre stone.
Centre stone integration
The pavé should support the centre stone rather than compete with it. The size of the pavé stones should be proportional to the centre (small pavé for a delicate centre, larger pavé for a substantial centre). The pavé should also stop cleanly before reaching the centre setting, with a clear transition between accent and centre design elements.
Metal choice
White metals (platinum, 18k white gold) allow the pavé diamonds to read as the dominant visual element. Yellow gold pavé produces strong contrast between metal and stones. Rose gold pavé produces a romantic, modern look. The metal choice affects both the visual character and the long term wear: platinum is the most durable choice for pavé bands that will be worn daily over decades.
These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Pavé is a setting style where careful proportion delivers continuous, lasting brilliance.
The VYOR Process
Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.
Consultation
A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.
