Oval Cut Rings – Frequently Asked Questions
What is an oval cut diamond?
The oval cut is a modified round brilliant, featuring 58 facets arranged across an elongated silhouette. Developed in its modern form in the 1950s by Russian jeweller Lazare Kaplan, the oval has become one of the fastest growing engagement ring shapes worldwide, particularly popular for its flattering effect on the finger and its excellent light return. Oval diamonds carry the same fire and brilliance as round brilliants while offering a softer, more romantic outline.
What is the ideal length to width ratio for an oval engagement ring?
The classic range for oval cut diamonds is between 1.30 and 1.45, with 1.35 to 1.40 representing the most balanced and widely admired proportion. A ratio above 1.45 produces a noticeably elongated, slim oval (sometimes called a stretched oval) which can flatter shorter fingers but reads as a different aesthetic. A ratio below 1.30 approaches a round shape and loses the elongated effect. Personal preference is the deciding factor, but understanding the proportion helps you choose deliberately rather than by accident.
What is the bow tie effect and how do you avoid it?
The bow tie effect is a dark shadow that appears across the centre of an oval diamond when the stone is poorly cut. It is caused by light leakage through the pavilion, where the facet angles do not return light efficiently. All oval diamonds have some degree of bow tie, but in well cut stones it is minimal and not noticeable to the naked eye. In poorly cut stones it is severe and remains visible even under good lighting. There is no certificate grade that captures bow tie performance, which is why personal expert review of the stone matters more for oval than for round brilliant. Our gemologist examines every shortlisted oval for bow tie performance before it is presented to a client.
How does an oval compare to a round brilliant?
Oval and round brilliant share the same 58 facet brilliant cut architecture, so optical performance is broadly comparable. The two key differences are face up size and price. An oval typically appears 10% larger face up than a round of equivalent carat weight, because its elongated outline covers more surface area on the finger. Oval is also typically 15 to 25% less expensive per carat than round, due to better rough utilisation during cutting. For clients who want a larger looking stone within a particular budget, oval is the most popular alternative to round brilliant.
What setting style works best for an oval engagement ring?
Oval suits a wide range of settings. The classic four claw solitaire is the most popular for its clean modern silhouette, particularly in an elongated cathedral setting that lifts the stone. Hidden halo settings are extremely popular for ovals, as the hidden pavé adds a subtle sparkle around the base of the stone without distracting from the oval outline. Three stone settings with pear or trapezoid side stones complement the oval shape beautifully, and bezel or half bezel settings produce a modern, sleek look. Our designer guides you through the setting choices that suit your hand, your stone proportions, and your lifestyle during consultation.
What colour and clarity does VYOR work with for oval engagement rings?
VYOR works with D, E, F, and G colour exclusively, and VS1 clarity and above. We do not stock anything below this range. Oval cut shows colour at the rounded tips (the two ends of the stone) more than across the centre, so working within the D to G range ensures consistent colour appearance from every angle. On clarity, VS1 and above guarantees no inclusions visible to the naked eye, particularly important for oval where the long open table can reveal inclusions that would hide more easily in other shapes.
Will an oval look bigger than a round of the same carat?
Yes. An oval diamond typically appears 10% larger face up than a round brilliant of the same carat weight, and the elongated outline also creates the visual impression of a longer, more slender finger. This is one of the main reasons oval has grown so quickly in popularity. A 1.5 carat oval reads roughly the same face up size as a 1.65 to 1.7 carat round, while costing 15 to 25% less per carat. For clients prioritising visual presence, oval offers significant value relative to round.
Does VYOR offer hidden halo, three stone, and bezel ovals?
Yes. Our oval collection includes designs across every major setting style, including solitaire, hidden halo, full halo, three stone (with pear, oval, or trapezoid side stones), bezel, half bezel, east west, and toi et moi. All designs are available in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum, and in lab grown diamond or premium moissanite. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our designer creates custom oval engagement rings from scratch alongside you.
Custom Oval Engagement Rings at VYOR
The oval cut is one of the fastest growing engagement ring shapes in the world, and one of the most rewarding to choose well. At VYOR, every oval engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with premium D/VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.
Oval delivers the brilliance of a round with the silhouette of a fancy shape. Its elongated form makes the finger appear longer and more slender, the 58 facet brilliant cut returns the same fire and scintillation as a round, and the larger face up presence means an oval reads bigger than a round of the same carat. For clients who want a contemporary, romantic stone that performs as well as a round at a more accessible price point, oval is the natural choice.
Every signature design in our oval collection is available in lab grown diamond or moissanite, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom oval engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.
Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer
Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every shortlisted oval diamond himself. For oval specifically, this means examining bow tie performance under daylight conditions, checking length to width ratio against the wearer's hand, evaluating symmetry across the two halves of the stone, and confirming the cut produces clean light return through the centre. Oval is a shape where the certificate cannot tell you everything; expert review of the physical stone matters more here than for almost any other cut.
Our designer, Nikolett, directs every setting decision and every aesthetic choice in the studio. For oval, she works with you on the proportion of the stone to the band, the height of the cathedral or solitaire mount, the prong style (four claw versus six claw, classic versus V claw at the tips), and the relationship between the oval outline and the wearer's hand. The right setting for an oval is the one that flatters both the stone and the hand wearing it.

How to Choose an Oval Diamond, A Gemologist's Guide
Oval is the trickiest popular shape to buy well, because GIA and IGI do not issue a true cut grade for oval the way they do for round. The certificate tells you carat, colour, clarity, polish, and symmetry, but not how the stone actually performs in real light. Five things our gemologist looks at on every oval at VYOR.
Bow tie performance
The bow tie is a dark shadow across the centre of the stone caused by light leakage through the pavilion. Every oval has some bow tie, but the difference between a well cut oval and a poorly cut oval is dramatic. We examine every shortlisted stone in daylight, not under jeweller's lighting, to see how the bow tie reads in real wearing conditions. Stones with severe bow tie are not presented to clients, regardless of how the certificate grades.
Length to width ratio
The classic oval range is 1.30 to 1.45. The most balanced and widely admired proportion is between 1.35 and 1.40. Above 1.45, the oval reads as elongated and slim; below 1.30, the oval begins to approach a round outline and loses its signature silhouette. There is no objectively correct ratio, but knowing your preference before you start matters more than for any other shape.
Depth and table percentages
A well cut oval sits at 58% to 62% depth and 53% to 63% table. Above 65% depth, the stone hides weight inside the ring rather than spreading face up; below 56% depth, the stone can lose light return. The certificate lists both percentages clearly and they are the first numbers our gemologist reviews on any oval report.
Symmetry
Oval is the most common shape to suffer from asymmetry. The two ends should be perfectly mirrored, the curve along each side should be smooth and consistent, and the centre point should be exactly centred. Asymmetry in an oval is visible to the naked eye and impossible to hide in a setting. We review symmetry on every shortlisted stone before presenting.
Colour, the VYOR D to G standard
VYOR works with D, E, F, and G colour exclusively for oval. The rounded tips of an oval show colour more visibly than the centre, because the tip facets retain more light without dispersing it across the stone. Below G grade, colour can appear unevenly at the tips, even in a white metal setting. Within the D to G range, oval faces up consistently colourless under any light condition. We do not stock colour grades below G because consistency matters more to us than catalogue depth.
These are the five factors our gemologist walks through in every consultation. The certificate is the starting point, not the conclusion.
The VYOR Process
Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.
Consultation
A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Our gemologist walks through stone options, certificate review, and the gemological criteria specific to oval. Our designer discusses setting direction, proportions for the wearer, and aesthetic choices. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.
Design
Once your stone and setting direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element (band width, stone height, prong style, finish, metal) before crafting begins.
Crafting
Your ring is finished in Perth by our team of senior master jewellers, using 100% recycled gold or platinum. Most custom oval engagement rings are completed within three to five weeks of design approval, faster than the Australian industry standard of six to eight weeks.
Delivery
Your finished ring is presented in person at the Wembley showroom, or dispatched anywhere in Australia by fully insured express courier with signature on delivery.
Why Choose VYOR for Your Oval Engagement Ring
There are many places in Australia to buy an oval engagement ring. VYOR is different in three specific ways that matter most for this category.
First, every consultation is led personally by the founders, a working gemologist and a working designer. Most Australian jewellers route consultations through sales consultants. We do not. Because oval is a shape where personal expert review of the stone matters more than for almost any other cut, this difference is most pronounced for oval.
Second, VYOR works with D, E, F, G colour and VS1 clarity and above, exclusively, with no exceptions. We do not stock lower grades. Combined with direct access to over 1.1 million GIA and IGI certified lab grown diamonds, this gives you depth of choice within a curated quality floor that few Australian competitors offer.
Third, every ring is designed and crafted in Perth using 100% recycled gold and platinum, with most custom oval engagement rings delivered within three to five weeks of design approval. No mass production, no offshore finishing, no surprise delays.
Where We Serve
VYOR's showroom is located in Wembley, Perth, Western Australia, and we deliver custom oval engagement rings to clients across the country, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin, and every regional postcode. For interstate clients, our private virtual consultation by secure video offers the same experience as visiting the Wembley showroom in person. All Australia wide orders ship free, fully insured, and express, with signature on delivery.
