Engagement Rings – A Promise of Forever

Lab-Grown Diamond & Moissanite Rings, Crafted for Timeless Love

Two diamonds, one natural diamond and one lab-created moissanite, on a reflective surface.

Moissanite vs. Diamond — The Smarter Choice

Why are more Australian couples choosing Moissanite? It allows you to have the carat size you dream of without the heavy price tag, all while being 100% conflict-free.

  • More Fire: Moissanite has superior light dispersion (fire) compared to a diamond, creating dazzling rainbow flashes.
  • Extreme Durability: Scoring 9.25 on the Mohs Scale, it is the second hardest gemstone on earth (harder than Sapphire or Ruby), making it perfect for everyday engagement rings.
  • Guaranteed Clarity: Unlike some natural stones, our Premium Moissanite is lab-created to be flawless (VVS1) and colourless (D-E), ensuring it never looks cloudy.

Answers to the questions every couple asks

Moissanite Engagement Ring FAQs

What is moissanite?

Moissanite is a gemstone made of silicon carbide, originally discovered by Henri Moissan in 1893 in fragments of a meteorite that had struck the earth in Arizona. Natural moissanite is extremely rare, so all moissanite used in fine jewellery today is laboratory grown using methods refined since the 1990s. Moissanite has a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale (compared to 10 for diamond), making it the second hardest gemstone commercially available. It is celebrated for exceptional fire and brilliance, often exceeding diamond in dispersion (the rainbow flash visible under direct light).

How is moissanite different from a diamond?

Moissanite and diamond are different materials with different gemological properties, though they look very similar to the naked eye. Diamond is pure crystallised carbon with a hardness of 10. Moissanite is silicon carbide with a hardness of 9.25. Diamond has a refractive index of 2.42; moissanite is higher at 2.65, producing more pronounced rainbow fire under direct light. Moissanite typically costs 70 to 85% less than a lab grown diamond of equivalent size, making it an excellent choice for clients seeking a larger stone within a particular budget.

Will moissanite scratch or chip?

Moissanite is extremely durable for everyday wear, second only to diamond in commercial gemstone hardness. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite resists scratching from virtually all common materials (only diamond and corundum can scratch it). It is significantly harder than sapphire, ruby, emerald, or any quartz based stone, and is the most durable diamond alternative available. The cropped corners of well cut moissanite stones, particularly in shapes like cushion, radiant, and asscher, further protect the stone from impact damage.

How does moissanite compare in cost to lab grown diamond?

Moissanite typically costs 70 to 85% less than a lab grown diamond of equivalent size and grade. A 2 carat round brilliant lab grown diamond at VYOR quality (D to G colour, VS1 and above) sits in the range of $5,000 to $8,000 depending on specific grade. A 2 carat round brilliant D VVS1 moissanite of equivalent size and visual appearance sits in the range of $800 to $1,500. For clients prioritising maximum visual presence within a particular budget, moissanite offers the most generous solution available in fine jewellery.

Will people know the difference between moissanite and diamond?

To the naked eye, the difference between high quality moissanite and lab grown diamond is very difficult to detect for most observers. Both produce strong brilliance and fire, both face up colourless in D grade, and both have similar light return profiles. Trained gemologists can distinguish the two through specialist testing (electrical conductivity, refractive index measurement, or under specific magnification). Most people who see a moissanite engagement ring in real life simply see a beautiful stone, and the practical difference in social context is minimal.

What grade moissanite does VYOR offer?

VYOR offers only D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite, with no exceptions. D is the colourless grade, equivalent to the top grade on the diamond colour scale. VVS1 (Very Very Slightly Included 1) is a clarity grade where any inclusions are virtually invisible even under 10x magnification. This is the highest commercially available moissanite grade, and it sits as the VYOR quality floor across our entire moissanite range. Every moissanite stone we sell is selected for optical performance, colour consistency, and clean light return.

What setting styles work best for moissanite engagement rings?

Every setting style at VYOR works equally well with moissanite. Because moissanite produces strong fire under direct light, brilliant cut friendly settings (solitaire, hidden halo, halo) particularly amplify the stone's character. Step cut moissanite (emerald, asscher) produces the same hall of mirrors effect as diamond. Bezel and half bezel settings frame moissanite as cleanly as they do diamond. Pavé bands pair beautifully with moissanite centre stones. Our designer guides each client through setting choices during consultation.

Is moissanite a good choice for an engagement ring?

For many clients, yes. Moissanite offers exceptional brilliance, durability suitable for daily wear, conflict free origin, and significantly lower cost than diamond. For clients prioritising a larger centre stone within a particular budget, those choosing based on environmental or ethical considerations, or those who simply prefer moissanite's slightly higher fire and dispersion, it is an excellent choice. For clients prioritising long term resale value or traditional diamond significance, lab grown diamond may be a better fit. Our designer and gemologist help each client make the right choice for their priorities during consultation.

Moissanite is one of the most brilliant and most durable diamond alternatives in fine jewellery, offering exceptional fire and scintillation at a significantly lower cost than lab grown diamond. At VYOR, every moissanite engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with D colour VVS1 clarity moissanite (the highest commercially available grade), and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Moissanite Engagement Rings at VYOR

Moissanite is the engagement ring choice of generous brilliance. With higher dispersion than diamond, exceptional 9.25 Mohs hardness, and a cost of typically 70 to 85% less than a lab grown diamond of equivalent size, moissanite offers visual presence, durability, and value in a single stone. The D VVS1 grade we work with exclusively delivers all of moissanite's benefits at the highest commercially available quality standard.

Our moissanite collection spans every major engagement ring shape (round brilliant, oval, princess, cushion, elongated cushion, emerald, pear, radiant, marquise, asscher) and every setting style. Every signature design in our collection is available with a D VVS1 moissanite centre, in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom moissanite engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, hand selects every moissanite stone for optical performance, colour consistency, and clean light return. While moissanite does not require institutional certification the way diamond does, our standards for moissanite are if anything more stringent than industry norms, with every stone reviewed personally before presentation to a client.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every moissanite engagement ring design in the studio. She works with each client on shape, setting, metal, and proportions. Moissanite's slightly higher fire than diamond can be amplified or restrained depending on setting choice, and our designer guides each client toward the configuration that produces the desired visual character. The VYOR D VVS1 Moissanite Standard

VYOR offers only D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite, with no exceptions. This standard is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and sits as a published quality floor that few Australian competitors match.

D colour

D is the colourless grade on the diamond colour scale, the highest possible rating. D moissanite faces up completely colourless under any lighting condition and against any setting metal, including bright white settings like platinum where lower grades might show faint warm tones. We do not stock E, F, or any lower grade for moissanite, even though those grades are commercially available.

VVS1 clarity

VVS1 (Very Very Slightly Included 1) is a clarity grade where inclusions are virtually invisible even under 10x magnification. At VVS1, every moissanite faces up perfectly clean to the naked eye in every shape and every setting. We do not stock VVS2, VS, or any lower clarity grade for moissanite.

Hand selection

Beyond the D VVS1 specification, every moissanite stone at VYOR is hand selected by our gemologist for optical performance under daylight conditions. We examine fire, brilliance, light return, and colour consistency on every stone before it is presented to a client. Stones that meet the D VVS1 grade on paper but underperform visually are not selected.

Durability standards

Moissanite hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale makes it the second hardest commercial gemstone after diamond. We only source moissanite from manufacturers with rigorous quality controls, ensuring every stone we sell delivers the full durability moissanite offers.
