Half-Bezel FAQ

What is a half bezel engagement ring?

A half bezel setting is an engagement ring style where the centre stone is secured by a metal rim that covers two opposing sides of the stone, leaving the other two sides exposed. The most common configurations are top and bottom (across the longer axis of an elongated stone) or left and right (across the shorter axis). Half bezel produces a modern, asymmetric framing of the stone and allows more light into the diamond than a full bezel while preserving most of the security benefit. It has become one of the most popular contemporary setting styles, particularly for oval, emerald, and elongated cushion shapes.

What is the difference between a half bezel and a full bezel?

A full bezel surrounds the entire perimeter of the stone with a continuous metal rim. A half bezel covers only two opposing sides. Full bezel produces maximum stone security and a fully framed silhouette. Half bezel produces a more open look, allows more light to enter the stone, and shows more of the stone's natural outline. The choice depends on the balance you want between protection and openness, and on the aesthetic direction of the ring. Both styles are highly contemporary and well suited to modern engagement ring design.

Which diamond shapes work best with half bezel?

Half bezel works particularly well with elongated shapes. Oval, emerald, elongated cushion, and elongated radiant all suit east west half bezel configurations, with the bezel across the top and bottom of the stone. Round, cushion, and asscher can also be half bezel set with the rims at the left and right, producing a distinctive modern silhouette. Pear and marquise are less commonly half bezel set because the points typically require full V claw or bezel protection.

Does a half bezel allow more sparkle than a full bezel?

Yes, modestly. Because more of the stone's perimeter is exposed in a half bezel compared to a full bezel, more light enters the stone from the sides, slightly increasing brilliance. The difference is noticeable in side by side comparison but rarely dramatic in real wear. The vast majority of light enters and exits through the table (top) and pavilion (bottom) of the stone, which neither full nor half bezel obstructs. Clients prioritising maximum sparkle typically choose claw settings; clients prioritising the modern bezel aesthetic with slightly more light return choose half bezel.

Is a half bezel as secure as a full bezel?

Almost. Full bezel offers the highest security of any setting style. Half bezel offers very high security with two exposed edges, which is still significantly more secure than claw settings and suitable for clients who want bezel protection on the more vulnerable edges of the stone while preserving openness elsewhere. For elongated stones, the half bezel covers the ends (where points or curves are most vulnerable) and leaves the long curved sides exposed.

Can half bezel be combined with other setting elements?

Yes. Half bezel combines beautifully with hidden halo, pavé band, and east west orientation. Half bezel hidden halo (with hidden halo tucked beneath the centre stone and bezel rims across two sides) is one of the most popular contemporary configurations at VYOR. Half bezel east west (with bezel rims at the top and bottom of a horizontal elongated stone) reads as fully modern. Pavé band half bezel adds sparkle along the finger while preserving the bezel signature at the centre.

Is half bezel suitable for active lifestyles?

Yes. Half bezel offers most of the active lifestyle benefits of full bezel: no exposed claws to catch on clothing, protection on two sides of the stone, and a low or moderate profile that does not snag. The two exposed sides of the stone are slightly more vulnerable than they would be in a full bezel, but in real wear the difference is minor. Half bezel is the most popular setting style at VYOR for clients who want a modern aesthetic combined with high durability.

Does VYOR offer half bezel engagement rings in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR half bezel design is available with the centre stone in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Half bezel moissanite produces a particularly clean, contemporary silhouette and is one of the most popular combinations among VYOR clients seeking a modern engagement ring at an accessible price point.

The half bezel is one of the most distinctly modern engagement ring setting styles in contemporary fine jewellery, combining the security and architectural framing of bezel with the openness and light entry of claw settings. At VYOR, every half bezel engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Half Bezel Engagement Rings at VYOR

Half bezel is the engagement ring style of contemporary balance. By framing the stone on two sides rather than four, the half bezel produces a silhouette that reads as both architectural and open, secure and luminous. It is one of the defining setting styles of modern engagement ring design and the most popular choice at VYOR among clients seeking a contemporary aesthetic with high everyday durability.

Every signature half bezel design in our collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in any diamond shape, with vertical or east west orientation, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. Combinations with hidden halo, pavé band, and cathedral profile are all represented. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom half bezel engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified diamond destined for a half bezel setting personally. Because the bezel rims partially frame the stone, cut performance and proportions matter for how the stone reads within the half bezel framing. Joseph reviews each shortlisted stone with attention to how it will read with two sides framed and two sides open.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every half bezel design decision in the studio. She works with you on the bezel placement (top and bottom for east west feel, left and right for traditional orientation), the bezel rim height and thickness, the metal choice for the bezel, the band integration, and the centre stone shape. The right half bezel is one where the framing is balanced against the openness, producing a deliberate modern silhouette.

How to Choose a Half Bezel Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide

Half bezel design involves balancing protection against openness, and framing against light. Five things our designer walks through on every half bezel consultation at VYOR.

Bezel placement

The first decision is which two sides of the stone the bezel will cover. East west half bezel (across the top and bottom of an elongated stone, with the long curved sides exposed) is the most contemporary configuration. Traditional half bezel (across the left and right sides) reads more classical. North south half bezel on a round or cushion centre produces a distinctive modern silhouette. The placement decision affects both the overall aesthetic and the practical wear of the ring.

Bezel rim height and thickness

A low, thin bezel rim sits close to the stone with minimal metal showing, producing a refined contemporary look. A higher, thicker bezel rim produces a bolder, more architectural statement. The rim proportion should match the stone size and the overall design weight.

Stone shape compatibility

Every shape works with half bezel, but the bezel design varies by shape. Oval and emerald half bezels follow the smooth curve or clean angles of the stone. Round and cushion half bezels produce clean circular or softly square framing. Pear and marquise half bezels are less common because the points typically need full V claw or bezel protection.

Metal choice for the bezel

Half bezel settings make the metal a significant visual element on two sides of the stone. Platinum and white gold produce a cool, contemporary frame. Yellow gold produces a warm, vintage inflected look. Rose gold produces a romantic, distinctive frame. Two tone half bezel designs (one metal for the bezel rims and another for the band) are particularly striking and increasingly popular.

Band integration

The band should flow naturally into the half bezel without visible joinery interrupting the design. Knife edge bands produce sharp contemporary lines. Comfort fit bands prioritise everyday wear. Tapered bands narrow toward the back of the finger for an elegant silhouette. Pavé bands add sparkle along the finger and pair beautifully with half bezel centre settings.

These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Half bezel rewards careful proportion at every level of the design.
