Elongated Cushion Specific FAQs

What is an elongated cushion cut diamond?

An elongated cushion is a cushion cut diamond with a length to width ratio above 1.20, typically falling between 1.25 and 1.50. It retains the rounded corners and softly curved sides of a classic cushion cut, but with a more rectangular outline that flatters the finger and reads as more contemporary than a square cushion. Modern elongated cushions feature 58 to 64 facets and can be cut in either crushed ice or chunky facet brilliance patterns. Elongated cushion is one of the fastest growing engagement ring shapes globally, particularly popular for combining vintage romance with a modern, finger flattering silhouette.

What is the difference between a cushion and an elongated cushion?

The distinction is the length to width ratio. A standard cushion sits at 1.00 to 1.20 (square or slightly rectangular). An elongated cushion sits at 1.20 and above, with a more pronounced rectangular outline. Both share the same rounded corners, brilliant cut faceting, and pillow softness, but they read differently on the finger: a square cushion reads classical and compact, while an elongated cushion reads modern and elegant. The two are listed as separate collections at VYOR because they suit different aesthetic preferences and pair with different settings.

What is the ideal length to width ratio for an elongated cushion?

The classic elongated cushion range is 1.25 to 1.50, with 1.30 to 1.40 representing the most balanced and widely admired proportion. Below 1.25 the stone reads as a softly rectangular cushion rather than truly elongated, and above 1.50 it begins to approach the slim outline of an emerald cut without the step cut clarity. The right ratio for the wearer depends on hand shape and personal preference, and our designer walks clients through the choice during consultation.

Does an elongated cushion have the bow tie effect?

Yes, but typically less pronounced than oval or pear. Every elongated brilliant cut shape has some degree of bow tie shadow across the centre, where light leaks through the pavilion at angles that fail to return cleanly. The rounded corners of an elongated cushion soften the bow tie effect compared to a true oval, and well cut elongated cushions show only a faint shadow that disappears under most lighting. Our gemologist examines bow tie performance in daylight on every shortlisted stone before it is presented to a client.

Why is elongated cushion currently so popular?

Elongated cushion has grown rapidly over the past five years for three reasons. First, it offers a larger face up size than a round of equivalent carat (typically 8 to 12% larger), giving more visual presence within the same budget. Second, the elongated outline flatters the finger in a way square shapes cannot, making the hand appear longer and more slender. Third, several high profile celebrity engagements have featured elongated cushion stones, driving wider awareness of the shape. For clients who want a stone that reads both classical and contemporary, elongated cushion is the most flexible option.

What setting style works best for an elongated cushion?

Elongated cushion suits a wide range of settings. The four claw cathedral solitaire is the most popular for its clean, contemporary silhouette. Hidden halo settings are extremely popular, with the pavé halo following the elongated outline and adding subtle sparkle around the base of the stone. Three stone settings with half moon, trapezoid, or pear side stones complement the elongated curve beautifully, and bezel or half bezel settings produce a particularly modern look. Our designer guides clients through the setting choices that suit the stone's ratio and the wearer's hand during consultation.

How does elongated cushion compare to oval?

Elongated cushion and oval share a similar silhouette goal (elongated, finger flattering, brilliant cut) but differ in two important ways. First, oval has sharper curved ends while elongated cushion has rounded, almost flattened ends with corners, creating a softer, more vintage outline. Second, oval typically shows a stronger bow tie effect because the elongated brilliant facets at the ends create more light leakage. Elongated cushion tends to read softer and more romantic, oval tends to read sleeker and more modern. The choice is aesthetic; both are excellent engagement ring shapes.

Does VYOR offer elongated cushion engagement rings in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR elongated cushion design is available in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Elongated cushion moissanite delivers a generous face up size at a significantly lower price point than lab grown diamond, making it an excellent choice for clients seeking a larger stone within a particular budget.

The elongated cushion is one of the fastest growing engagement ring shapes in the world, combining the soft vintage charm of a classic cushion with the modern, finger flattering outline of a more rectangular silhouette. At VYOR, every elongated cushion engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Elongated Cushion Engagement Rings at VYOR

Elongated cushion is the engagement ring shape of the moment. Softer than oval, more contemporary than classic cushion, and significantly larger face up than round of equivalent carat, the elongated cushion has become the dominant choice for clients who want a stone that reads both timeless and current. The rounded corners and curved sides preserve the vintage character of cushion cuts, while the elongated outline introduces a modern visual rhythm that flatters every hand shape.

Every signature design in our elongated cushion collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. Both crushed ice and chunky facet brilliance patterns are represented in our range. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom elongated cushion engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every shortlisted elongated cushion diamond himself. For elongated cushion specifically, this means examining bow tie performance under daylight conditions, confirming the length to width ratio matches the client's preference, checking symmetry across all four sides and corners, and verifying the chosen brilliance pattern (crushed ice or chunky facet) reads as intended in real wearing conditions.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every setting decision and every aesthetic choice in the studio. For elongated cushion, she works with you on the ratio that flatters the wearer's hand, the cathedral or claw configuration that suits the proportions, the choice between hidden halo or solitaire, and the relationship between the stone's curve and the band proportions. The right setting for an elongated cushion balances its vintage character with contemporary refinement.

How to Choose an Elongated Cushion Diamond, A Gemologist's Guide

Elongated cushion is one of the most variable shapes in fine jewellery, with significant differences between stones even within the same certificate grade. GIA and IGI do not issue a true cut grade for cushion or elongated cushion, so the certificate alone is not enough. Five things our gemologist looks at on every elongated cushion at VYOR.

Length to width ratio

The classic elongated cushion range is 1.25 to 1.50, with 1.30 to 1.40 producing the most balanced proportion. Different ratios suit different aesthetic preferences and different hand shapes, and knowing your preferred ratio before stone selection saves time and protects against compromise.

Brilliance pattern, crushed ice or chunky facet

The first decision on any cushion is the pattern of light return. Crushed ice cushions break light into small, dense, sparkling reflections, producing intense scintillation. Chunky facet cushions return light in larger, more defined flashes, producing broader visual structure. Both are valid; both are popular. The choice is aesthetic.

Bow tie performance

Every elongated brilliant cut shape has some bow tie shadow, but the rounded corners of an elongated cushion soften the effect compared to oval. We examine every shortlisted stone in daylight conditions to confirm the bow tie is minimal and disappears in normal wear. Stones with severe bow tie are not presented to clients regardless of the certificate grade.

Depth percentage

Cushions are commonly cut too deep, hiding weight inside the ring rather than spreading face up. A well cut elongated cushion sits at 60% to 68% depth. Above 70%, the stone hides significant carat weight from the face up view. We review depth percentage on every stone before shortlisting.

Colour, the VYOR D to G standard

VYOR works with D, E, F, and G colour exclusively for elongated cushion. The rounded corners of cushion forgive colour better than the pointed corners of princess or marquise, but we still hold the brand floor at G or higher to ensure consistent appearance across every setting metal. On clarity, VS1 and above ensures no inclusions visible to the naked eye in any stone we sell.

These are the five factors our gemologist walks through in every consultation. The certificate is the starting point, not the conclusion.

The VYOR Process

Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.

Consultation

A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Our gemologist walks through stone options, certificate review, and the criteria specific to elongated cushion (ratio, brilliance pattern, bow tie, depth). Our designer discusses setting direction, hidden halo versus solitaire, and aesthetic choices for the wearer. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.

Design

Once your stone and setting direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element (band width, stone height, prong style, finish, metal) before crafting begins.

Your ring is finished in Perth by our team of senior master jewellers, using 100% recycled gold or platinum. Most custom elongated cushion engagement rings are completed within three to five weeks of design approval, faster than the Australian industry standard of six to eight weeks.
