Cathedral Engagement Ring FAQ
What is a cathedral engagement ring setting?
A cathedral setting is an engagement ring profile in which the centre stone is raised above the band by two arched metal supports, similar in shape to the arches of a Gothic cathedral. The cathedral profile lifts the stone for greater visual presence, creates an elegant silhouette when viewed from the side, and allows the band to flow seamlessly under the stone. Cathedral can be combined with any centre stone setting style (solitaire, halo, trilogy) and any claw configuration, making it one of the most flexible and most popular profile choices in modern engagement ring design.
Why is it called cathedral?
The name comes from the visual resemblance between the two arched metal supports that hold the stone and the soaring arches of Gothic cathedrals. The cathedral profile entered fine jewellery design in the early 20th century and has remained one of the most popular setting profiles ever since, particularly for clients who want a ring with significant visual presence and an elegant side profile. The term cathedral refers specifically to the architectural feature of the arches, not to any particular claw configuration or stone shape.
What is the difference between a cathedral and a regular solitaire?
A regular (or low set) solitaire holds the stone close to the band with prongs or a bezel attached directly to the band itself. A cathedral solitaire raises the stone above the band on two arched supports, creating space between the stone and the finger. The cathedral profile makes the stone more visually prominent, particularly when viewed from the side, and allows pavé or other decorative work to be added to the arches. Cathedral is a profile choice; low set and high set solitaires represent the alternatives.
Are cathedral settings more difficult to clean?
Slightly, but not significantly. The arched space beneath the stone in a cathedral setting can collect dust and lotion residue over time, which is the most common cleaning consideration. Regular at home cleaning (mild soapy water with a soft brush, focusing on the underside of the stone) handles this easily, and professional ultrasonic cleaning resolves any buildup that home cleaning misses. Every VYOR engagement ring includes complimentary lifetime polishing and inspection appointments at our Wembley showroom or via post for interstate clients.
Can a cathedral setting be combined with a halo or pavé?
Yes. Cathedral is one of the most flexible profiles and combines beautifully with virtually every setting style. Cathedral hidden halo is one of the most popular contemporary designs, with a hidden halo of pavé tucked beneath the centre stone visible only from the side. Cathedral with pavé arches features small diamonds set along the inside edges of the cathedral supports for additional sparkle. Cathedral trilogy raises all three stones for a particularly dramatic visual presence. Our designer guides clients toward the cathedral combination that suits their overall design direction.
Are cathedral settings more secure for active wear?
The cathedral profile does not affect stone security directly; the prongs or bezel still do the work of holding the stone. However, because the stone sits higher above the finger, a cathedral setting can catch on clothing or equipment more easily than a low set design. Clients with active lifestyles often choose low set cathedrals (where the stone sits only slightly above the finger) or pair cathedral with a bezel set centre for additional protection. Our designer walks each client through the height and lifestyle considerations during consultation.
How tall is a typical cathedral setting?
Cathedral height varies significantly based on design intent. A low cathedral lifts the stone 1 to 2 millimetres above the band, producing a subtle elegant silhouette suitable for everyday wear without snagging. A standard cathedral lifts the stone 3 to 5 millimetres for greater visual presence. A high cathedral lifts the stone 6 millimetres or more for a dramatic, statement profile most popular for engagement rings that will be worn alongside a substantial wedding band. The right height depends on lifestyle, aesthetic preference, and how the ring will sit alongside future stacking pieces.
Does VYOR offer cathedral engagement rings in moissanite?
Yes. Every VYOR cathedral design is available in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Cathedral moissanite is particularly popular among VYOR clients seeking a larger and more visually prominent centre stone within a particular budget, since the cathedral profile naturally amplifies the visual presence of the stone.
The cathedral profile is one of the most enduring and most flexible setting choices in fine jewellery, lifting the centre stone above the band on two arched supports for an elegant raised silhouette. At VYOR, every cathedral engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.
Custom Cathedral Engagement Rings at VYOR
Cathedral is the engagement ring profile of elevation. By raising the centre stone above the band on architectural arched supports, the cathedral produces a silhouette of presence and elegance, particularly when viewed from the side. It is one of the most flexible setting profiles in fine jewellery, working with solitaire, halo, trilogy, and pavé configurations, and with every diamond shape from round brilliant to elongated cushion.
Every signature cathedral design in our collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in any diamond shape, with multiple cathedral height options, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom cathedral engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.
Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer
Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified diamond destined for a cathedral setting personally. Because the cathedral profile raises the stone above the finger, the stone is more visible from every angle, particularly the side profile. This makes cut performance and proportion matter more for cathedral designs than for low set styles, and Joseph reviews every shortlisted stone with attention to how it reads in the elevated position.
Our designer, Nikolett, directs every cathedral design decision in the studio. She works with you on the cathedral height (low, standard, or high), the arch style (smooth or detailed with pavé), the combination with other setting elements (solitaire, hidden halo, trilogy), the claw configuration on the centre stone, and the band integration. The right cathedral is one where the elevation of the stone is matched by the proportion of the supporting design.

How to Choose a Cathedral Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide
Cathedral design is fundamentally a decision about elevation and proportion. Five things our designer walks through on every cathedral consultation at VYOR.
Cathedral height
Low (1 to 2 mm above the band), standard (3 to 5 mm), or high (6 mm or more). Low cathedral suits everyday wear without snagging. Standard cathedral is the most popular and produces the classic elevated silhouette. High cathedral produces dramatic visual presence and pairs best with substantial wedding bands.
Arch style
Smooth arches read most contemporary and minimalist. Pavé arches (with small diamonds set along the inside edges of the supports) add additional sparkle visible from the side. Filigree or detailed arches read most vintage. The arch style should match the overall design direction of the ring.
Setting combination
Cathedral can stand alone as a solitaire profile, or combine with other elements. Cathedral hidden halo is one of the most popular contemporary designs (hidden halo of pavé tucked beneath the centre stone, visible only from the side). Cathedral trilogy raises all three stones for a statement composition. Cathedral with pavé band adds sparkle along the band itself.
Stone shape pairing
Cathedral works with every diamond shape, but the shape affects the proportions of the supporting arches. Round, oval, and cushion centres pair with smoothly curved arches. Emerald, asscher, and princess centres pair with more angular, architectural arch lines. Pear and marquise centres require the arches to integrate with V claw point protection at the tips.
Metal and finish
The arches are a significant visual element in a cathedral, so the metal and finish matter. Polished arches in platinum or white gold produce a sleek contemporary line. Yellow gold arches produce a warm, classical statement. Rose gold arches produce a particularly romantic profile that has grown in popularity for cathedral designs. Two tone cathedrals (yellow gold arches with white gold band, or vice versa) are also available on custom designs.
These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Cathedral is the profile where elevation creates presence, and proportion delivers elegance.
The VYOR Process
Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.
Consultation
A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Our gemologist walks through stone options and certificate review with attention to cut performance for elevated profiles. Our designer discusses cathedral height, arch style, setting combination, and aesthetic direction. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.
Design
Once your stone and setting direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element (cathedral height, arch style, claw configuration, band width, finish, metal) before crafting begins.
