Round Cut FAQs

What is a round brilliant diamond?

A round brilliant is the most popular engagement ring diamond shape in the world, accounting for over 60% of all engagement ring sales globally. It features 58 precisely angled facets arranged for maximum light return, producing the strongest brilliance and fire of any diamond shape. Round brilliant is also the only diamond shape for which GIA and IGI issue a true cut grade (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor), making it the most transparently graded shape on the market.

Why is round brilliant more expensive than other shapes?

A round brilliant diamond typically costs 30 to 40% more per carat than a fancy shape of equivalent grade. The reason is rough utilisation: cutting a round brilliant from a raw diamond crystal retains only about 40% of the rough, compared to 60% or more for shapes like oval, princess, and cushion. The remaining material is lost during the cutting process. Round brilliant is also the most labour intensive shape to cut, requiring exact symmetry across 58 facets.

What cut grade should I look for in a round brilliant?

GIA Excellent or IGI Ideal is the standard at VYOR. Below that, optical performance drops noticeably and the stone returns less light to the eye. For clients who want the absolute top tier, we look for Triple Excellent (Excellent cut, Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry) with Hearts and Arrows optical patterning. Joseph reviews every shortlisted stone personally to confirm the certificate translates into real fire under daylight, not only under jeweller's lighting.

What colour and clarity grade does VYOR work with?

VYOR works with D, E, F, and G colour exclusively, and VS1 clarity and above. We do not stock anything below this range. The reason is consistency: at G colour and VS1 clarity, a round brilliant returns light cleanly under any lighting condition and any setting metal, with no inclusions visible to the naked eye. Going below this range can produce a stone that grades well on paper but disappoints in person. Joseph reviews inclusion plots on every shortlisted stone before presenting.

How long does it take to make a custom round brilliant engagement ring?

Most VYOR custom round brilliant engagement rings are designed, crafted, and delivered within three to five weeks of design approval, faster than the standard Australian timeframe of six to eight weeks. For clients who need a ring sooner, our Ready to Ship collection includes selected round brilliant designs that dispatch from Perth within one to three business days.

Can I have a round brilliant engagement ring in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR design is available in lab grown diamond or premium D/VVS1 moissanite. Round brilliant moissanite is an excellent choice for those seeking a larger stone within a particular budget. Moissanite typically costs 70 to 85% less than a lab grown diamond of equivalent size, with comparable optical performance to the naked eye. Joseph and Nikolett walk through the visual and gemological differences during your consultation so you can choose on full information.

Does VYOR offer solitaire, halo, three stone, and bezel settings for round brilliant?

Yes. Our round brilliant collection includes designs across every major setting style, including solitaire, three stone, hidden halo, full halo, bezel, half bezel, east west, and toi et moi. All are available in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum, and in lab grown diamond or moissanite. If your design vision sits outside the existing collection, Nikolett designs custom round brilliant engagement rings from scratch alongside you.

Does VYOR ship round brilliant engagement rings Australia wide?

Yes. Every VYOR order ships free, fully insured, by express courier with signature on delivery to any Australian address. Standard delivery to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide is two to five business days. For interstate clients who would like a consultation before ordering, our private virtual consultation by secure video offers the same experience as visiting the Wembley showroom in person.

Custom Round Brilliant Engagement Rings at VYOR

The round brilliant is the most popular engagement ring diamond shape in the world, accounting for over 60% of all engagement ring sales globally, and the only shape with a true cut grade issued by the major certification institutes. At VYOR, every round brilliant engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally selected by Joseph, or premium D/VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

For clients who want the most light, the broadest setting flexibility, and the most transparently graded stone on the market, round brilliant is the answer.

If your vision sits outside our existing designs, Nikolett designs custom round brilliant engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Joseph, Designed by Nikolett

Joseph is the gemologist behind every VYOR ring. He reviews every shortlisted certified diamond personally, examining cut performance, inclusion plotting, light return under daylight conditions, and the relationship between certificate proportions and real face up beauty. For round brilliant specifically, Joseph confirms that the GIA Excellent or IGI Ideal cut grade translates into measurable optical performance, not only paper credentials.

Nikolett is the designer behind every VYOR design. She directs every signature setting, every CAD review, and every aesthetic decision in the studio. For round brilliant, Nikolett works with you on the proportions specific to the wearer (finger length, hand shape, lifestyle, style direction) so the setting flatters the stone and the hand rather than only framing the diamond.

Together, Joseph and Nikolett personally lead every consultation, both at the Wembley showroom and via secure video for interstate clients. Read more about Joseph and Nikolett on our About page.

How to Choose a Round Brilliant Diamond, A Gemologist's Guide

Round brilliant is the most rigorously graded shape on the market, and the easiest to buy well, provided you focus on the right factors. Five things Joseph looks at on every round brilliant at VYOR.

Cut grade

For round brilliant, cut grade is the single most important factor. GIA Excellent or IGI Ideal is the VYOR minimum. Below that grade, light return drops measurably and the stone loses fire. For the top tier, look for Triple Excellent (Excellent cut, Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry), often paired with Hearts and Arrows optical patterning. A Triple Excellent stone with Hearts and Arrows produces a level of light performance visible to the naked eye, not only under specialist lighting.

Proportions, depth and table

A well cut round brilliant sits at 59% to 62.5% depth and 53% to 58% table. Outside that range, the stone can appear dark in the centre (depth too high) or lifeless (table too wide). The certificate lists both percentages clearly, and they are the first two numbers Joseph reads on any round brilliant report.

Crown and pavilion angles

The crown angle should sit between 33 and 35 degrees, and the pavilion angle between 40.6 and 41 degrees. These two angles together determine how light enters, refracts inside, and exits the stone. Slightly off the ideal range and brilliance drops; outside the broader range and the stone can produce visible light leakage through the pavilion.

Colour, the VYOR D to G standard

VYOR works with D, E, F, and G colour exclusively for round brilliant. In a white metal setting (platinum or white gold), all four grades face up colourless to the naked eye. In yellow or rose gold, even G grade reads as pure white against the warmth of the metal. We do not stock colour grades below G because the consistency of appearance breaks down beyond that point, regardless of how attractive the certificate price looks.

Clarity, the VYOR VS1 minimum

VYOR works with VS1 clarity and above. At VS1, inclusions are not visible to the naked eye in any well cut round brilliant, and the stone returns light cleanly under any condition. We do not stock SI or I clarity grades. Below VS1, even certified stones can show pinpoint inclusions or feathering that distract from the cut performance, and the savings rarely justify the visible compromise in a stone you will wear every day for the rest of your life.

These are the five factors Joseph walks through in every consultation. The certificate is the starting point, not the conclusion.

The VYOR Process

Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.

Consultation

A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet directly with Joseph and Nikolett. Joseph walks through stone options and gemological criteria; Nikolett discusses design direction and aesthetic choices. Together we present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.

Once your stone and setting direction are confirmed, Nikolett produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element (band width, stone height, prong style, finish, metal) before crafting begins.

Crafting

Your ring is finished in Perth by our team of senior master jewellers, using 100% recycled gold or platinum. Most custom round brilliant engagement rings are completed within three to five weeks of design approval, faster than the Australian industry standard of six to eight weeks.

Delivery

Your finished ring is presented in person at the Wembley showroom, or dispatched anywhere in Australia by fully insured express courier with signature on delivery.

Why Choose VYOR for Your Round Brilliant Engagement Ring

There are many places in Australia to buy a round brilliant engagement ring. VYOR is different in three specific ways that matter most for this category.

First, every consultation is led personally by the founders. Joseph (gemologist) and Nikolett (designer) both attend every meeting. Most Australian jewellers route consultations through sales consultants. We do not. When you meet VYOR, you meet the people who set the brand's standards.

Second, VYOR works with D, E, F, G colour and VS1 clarity and above, exclusively. We do not chase volume by stocking lower grades, because consistency matters more to us than catalogue size. Combined with direct access to over 1.1 million GIA and IGI certified lab grown diamonds, this gives you depth of choice within a curated quality floor that few Australian competitors match.

Third, every ring is designed and crafted in Perth using 100% recycled gold and platinum, with most custom round brilliant engagement rings delivered within three to five weeks of design approval. No mass production, no offshore finishing, no surprise delays.
