What is a lab grown diamond?
A lab grown diamond is a real diamond, chemically and optically identical to a mined diamond, created in a controlled laboratory environment rather than extracted from the earth. Lab grown diamonds are made of pure crystallised carbon (the same material as natural diamonds), share the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same refractive index, and the same brilliance and fire. They are certified by the same major gemological institutes (GIA and IGI) using the same grading standards (the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity, carat).
Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. Lab grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds. The Federal Trade Commission in the United States and equivalent bodies internationally have ruled that lab grown diamonds meet the definition of diamond, and major institutes including GIA and IGI grade them on the same scale as mined diamonds. They are not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials that resemble diamond. A lab grown diamond is a diamond, simply created above ground rather than below it.
How are lab grown diamonds made?
Lab grown diamonds are produced through one of two methods. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) replicates the conditions deep within the earth where natural diamonds form, using extreme pressure and temperature to crystallise carbon into diamond over several weeks. Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) builds the diamond layer by layer from carbon rich gas in a controlled chamber. Both methods produce gem quality diamonds that are gemologically identical to natural diamonds and indistinguishable to the naked eye.
What is the difference between lab grown diamond and natural diamond?
The only meaningful difference is origin. Lab grown diamonds are created in controlled conditions over weeks, while natural diamonds form in the earth over millions to billions of years. Both are pure crystallised carbon, both have identical physical properties, both are graded by the same institutes, and both are visually indistinguishable to the naked eye. Lab grown diamonds typically cost 30 to 60% less than natural diamonds of equivalent grade, and they offer a conflict free, environmentally lower impact alternative. Are lab grown diamonds graded the same way as natural diamonds?
Yes. GIA and IGI both grade lab grown diamonds using the same 4Cs framework (cut, colour, clarity, carat) and the same scales (D to Z for colour, FL to I3 for clarity). Every lab grown diamond at VYOR carries either a GIA or IGI certificate confirming its grade, with the same documentation a natural diamond would receive. The only certificate notation indicating lab grown origin is a line stating "laboratory grown" or "lab grown", which appears alongside the standard grading information.
Will the value of lab grown diamonds hold over time?
The retail price of lab grown diamonds has decreased over the past decade as production methods have improved and supply has grown, and this trend may continue. The same is true of most produced gemstones (and many other categories of fine goods). Lab grown diamonds are best understood as fine jewellery for personal wear and meaning, not as financial investments. For clients prioritising long term investment value, natural diamonds historically retain price more reliably, though they cost significantly more upfront. What grade lab grown diamonds does VYOR work with?
VYOR works exclusively with D, E, F, and G colour and VS1 clarity and above. We do not stock anything below this range, with no exceptions. This quality floor is above the published standard of most Australian jewellers and ensures every VYOR lab grown diamond faces up consistently colourless and clean to the naked eye under any setting metal and any lighting condition. The VYOR Lab Grown Diamond Standard
VYOR works exclusively with D, E, F, and G colour and VS1 clarity and above lab grown diamonds. This standard is held without exception, and it sits significantly above the published quality floor of most Australian engagement ring specialists.
Colour: D, E, F, G
At D (the highest grade) the stone is completely colourless. At G the stone faces up colourless to the naked eye in any setting metal. Below G, faint warm tones become detectable in white metal settings, which is why we hold the floor at G. Our gemologist matches colour grades to setting metals during consultation, recommending higher grades for platinum and white gold settings where colour contrast is most visible.
Clarity: VS1 and above
At VS1 (Very Slightly Included 1), any inclusions are not visible to the naked eye and are difficult to detect even under 10x magnification. Below VS1, inclusions can become apparent in larger stones or in step cuts like emerald and asscher. Our floor at VS1 ensures every VYOR diamond faces up clean regardless of shape.
Certification: GIA or IGI
Every lab grown diamond at VYOR carries a current certificate from either the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the International Gemological Institute (IGI), the two most respected diamond grading laboratories in the world. The certificate accompanies every diamond and confirms its 4Cs grading independently of VYOR.
Personal stone review
Beyond the certificate, every shortlisted lab grown diamond at VYOR is personally reviewed by Joseph before presentation to a client. For shapes where GIA does not issue a true cut grade (oval, cushion, emerald, pear, marquise, asscher, princess, radiant, elongated cushion), this personal review is the difference between a stone that grades well on paper and a stone that performs beautifully in real wear.

Consultation
A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Our gemologist walks through lab grown diamond options across shapes and grades. Our designer discusses setting direction, metal choice, and proportions. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.
Design
Once your stone and setting direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element before crafting begins.
Crafting
Your ring is finished in Perth by our team of senior master jewellers, using 100% recycled gold or platinum. Most custom lab-grown diamond engagement rings are completed within three to five weeks of design approval, faster than the Australian industry standard.
Delivery
Your finished ring is presented in person at the Wembley showroom, or dispatched anywhere in Australia by fully insured express courier with signature on delivery.
