Hidden Halo FAQ

What is a hidden halo engagement ring?

A hidden halo is a circle of small pavé diamonds set directly beneath the centre stone, visible only when the ring is viewed from the side or at an angle. From directly above, the ring reads as a solitaire with the centre stone fully visible and unobstructed. From the side profile, the hidden halo reveals itself as a sparkling collar of stones surrounding the base of the centre stone. The hidden halo has become one of the most popular contemporary engagement ring designs because it adds sparkle and detail without changing the face up silhouette of the ring.

What is the difference between a hidden halo and a full halo?

The two are visually different and read quite differently on the hand. A full halo surrounds the centre stone with visible pavé from above, making the centre stone appear larger and creating a clear ring of diamonds in the face up view. A hidden halo sits underneath the centre stone, invisible from above, revealing itself only from the side. Full halo reads as more traditional and statement; hidden halo reads as more contemporary and considered, with a discreet detail visible only to those looking closely.

Why is hidden halo so popular for engagement rings?

Hidden halo has grown rapidly over the past five years because it offers three things at once: the clean face up silhouette of a solitaire, the additional sparkle and visual interest of a halo, and a side profile detail that rewards close inspection without dominating the design. Many clients describe it as the best of both worlds, and it has become particularly popular for clients who admire solitaire restraint but want a design with more depth and detail. The side angle reveal also makes the ring photograph beautifully.

Can a hidden halo be added to any centre stone shape?

Yes. Hidden halo works with every diamond shape and follows the outline of the centre stone. Round, oval, cushion, and elongated cushion hidden halos are the most popular because the curves follow naturally around the stone. Emerald, asscher, and princess hidden halos produce a more geometric collar effect with cleaner angles. Pear and marquise hidden halos require careful design at the pointed ends to ensure the halo continues around the tip without leaving a gap.

How is a hidden halo different from a pavé band?

The two are different design elements and can be used together or separately. A pavé band features small diamonds set along the visible top of the band, producing sparkle along the finger. A hidden halo features small diamonds set as a collar beneath the centre stone, producing sparkle and dimension at the base of the centre. Many VYOR designs combine both, with a pavé band leading into a hidden halo for layered detail throughout the ring.

Does a hidden halo make the centre stone look larger?

Slightly, and more importantly, it makes the centre stone setting look more substantial overall. The hidden halo extends the visual footprint of the centre stone area, creating the impression of a larger setting platform even when the face up view shows the centre alone. This effect is particularly pronounced when the hidden halo is sized to extend just slightly beyond the centre stone edge, creating a soft optical extension visible from above without being obvious.

Can I see the hidden halo when the ring is being worn?

Yes, from the side. When the ring sits on the hand and is viewed from another person's perspective (across a table, when shaking hands, in side profile photographs), the hidden halo is clearly visible as a collar of sparkle beneath the centre stone. When the wearer looks down at their own hand, the hidden halo is typically not visible from that angle, which preserves the solitaire silhouette in the wearer's everyday view. This combination of visible detail to others and clean line for the wearer is part of what makes hidden halo so popular.

Does VYOR offer hidden halo engagement rings in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR hidden halo design is available with the centre stone in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. The pavé halo stones are typically lab grown diamond for optical consistency. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Hidden halo moissanite is one of the most popular combinations among VYOR clients seeking a larger centre stone within budget while preserving the contemporary hidden halo aesthetic.

The hidden halo is one of the defining contemporary engagement ring designs and one of the most requested at VYOR. At VYOR, every hidden halo engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Hidden Halo Engagement Rings at VYOR

Hidden halo is the engagement ring style of considered detail. By tucking the halo of pavé beneath the centre stone rather than around it, the design preserves the clean face up silhouette of a solitaire while introducing a side profile reveal that adds dimension, sparkle, and personality. It is the style of choice for clients who want their ring to read clean from above and rich from every other angle.

Every signature hidden halo design in our collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in any centre stone shape, with multiple halo coverage options, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom hidden halo engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified centre diamond destined for a hidden halo setting personally, and oversees colour and clarity matching of the halo accent stones to ensure the entire ring reads as a unified composition. Halo accent diamonds receive the same VYOR quality floor as larger stones (G colour or higher and VS1 clarity or higher), significantly above the industry standard for accent stones.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every hidden halo design decision in the studio. She works with you on the halo stone size, the halo coverage (full wrap around the centre or partial), the halo position (close to the centre stone or with a small gap for additional dimension), the centre stone setting integration, and the metal choice. The right hidden halo is one that adds depth from the side without competing with the centre stone from above.

How to Choose a Hidden Halo Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide

Hidden halo design is fundamentally about proportion and visibility. Small choices in halo stone size and coverage produce dramatically different finished rings. Five things our designer walks through on every hidden halo consultation at VYOR.

Halo stone size

The halo stones should be sized in proportion to the centre. A larger centre stone (2 carat and above) supports larger halo stones for visual balance. A smaller centre stone (1 carat and below) favours smaller halo stones to preserve proportion. Most VYOR hidden halos use 0.01 to 0.03 carat halo stones depending on the centre stone size.

Halo coverage

Full hidden halo wraps the entire perimeter of the centre stone beneath the setting. Partial hidden halo covers two or three sides, producing the effect from the most visible angles while reducing total stone count. East west hidden halo wraps only the top and bottom of an elongated stone in east west orientation. Our designer guides clients toward the coverage that suits the centre stone and the design budget.

Visibility profile

A close hidden halo sits tight against the centre stone, producing a subtle, refined reveal from the side. A spaced hidden halo sits slightly below the centre with a small gap of metal between, producing a more pronounced reveal and additional dimension. The visibility profile decision affects how prominent the hidden halo reads from the side.

Centre stone shape compatibility

Every shape works with hidden halo, but each requires specific halo design. Round and oval hidden halos follow the smooth curve of the centre. Cushion and emerald hidden halos follow the geometric outline with clean transitions. Pear and marquise hidden halos require careful design at the pointed ends to maintain continuous halo coverage without gaps.

Band integration

Hidden halo can stand alone with a plain band, or combine with pavé extending down the band, producing layered sparkle from centre through to band. Plain band lets the hidden halo read as a discrete detail. Pavé band continues the sparkle along the finger for a fully decorated design. The choice depends on overall design direction and total carat weight target.

These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Hidden halo rewards careful proportion at every level of the design.
