Everything you need to know about hidden halo rings

Halo FAQ

What is a halo engagement ring?

A halo engagement ring features a centre stone surrounded by a circle of smaller pavé diamonds (the halo), visible from above as a sparkling ring of accents framing the centre. The halo first appeared in the Georgian and Victorian eras of fine jewellery (18th and 19th centuries) and has been one of the most popular engagement ring styles ever since. Modern halos typically use 0.01 to 0.03 carat accent diamonds set around the perimeter of the centre stone, adding total carat weight and visual presence while making the centre stone appear larger and more prominent.

What is the difference between a halo and a hidden halo?

A halo is visible from above, surrounding the centre stone with a clear ring of pavé diamonds in the face up view. A hidden halo sits beneath the centre stone, invisible from above and revealing itself only when the ring is viewed from the side. Halo reads as more traditional, prominent, and statement; hidden halo reads as more contemporary, considered, and discreet. Many clients choose between them based on whether they want the halo effect to be the dominant visual feature (halo) or a subtle detail (hidden halo).

Does a halo make the centre stone look larger?

Significantly. A halo of pavé extends the visual footprint of the centre stone area, making the entire setting read as substantially larger than the centre stone alone. A 1 carat round centre with a halo typically reads face up like a 1.50 to 1.75 carat solitaire, depending on the size of the halo stones. This is one of the main reasons halo is chosen: it produces maximum visual presence for the centre stone investment. For clients seeking generous presence within a particular budget, halo is the most visually generous setting style.

Which diamond shapes suit halo settings best?

Every diamond shape works with halo, and each produces a distinct silhouette. Round halo is the most classical and the most popular, with the round halo following the centre stone outline in a perfect circle. Oval halo is the most contemporary, with the elongated halo flattering the finger. Cushion halo blends vintage and modern, with the halo following the pillow shaped outline. Emerald, asscher, and princess halos produce more geometric framing. Pear and marquise halos require careful design at the pointed ends to maintain continuous coverage without gaps.

What is a double halo?

A double halo features two concentric rings of pavé surrounding the centre stone, producing the most dramatic and visually generous halo silhouette. The inner halo sits close to the centre stone with smaller stones, and the outer halo sits further out with slightly larger stones. Double halos significantly increase total carat weight (commonly adding 0.40 to 0.70 carat across the two halos) and produce maximum visual presence. They are best suited to larger centre stones and clients who want a fully statement halo ring.

Are halo rings more difficult to clean?

Slightly. The pavé halo around the centre stone can collect dust and lotion residue over time, particularly in the small spaces between the accent stones. Regular at home cleaning with mild soapy water and a soft brush handles this easily. Professional ultrasonic cleaning at the Wembley showroom (or via insured post for interstate clients) is recommended every six months and is included as complimentary lifetime service on every VYOR engagement ring. The cleaning consideration is minor and the same as for any pavé band ring.

Can a halo be combined with pavé or trilogy?

Yes. Halo combines beautifully with other setting elements. Halo with pavé band continues the sparkle from the centre out along the finger. Halo trilogy (centre stone with halo, flanked by two side stones, sometimes with their own mini halos) is a particularly elaborate and traditional design. Halo with cathedral profile lifts the entire halo above the band for visual prominence. Our designer guides clients through the halo combinations that suit their overall design direction.

Does VYOR offer halo engagement rings in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR halo design is available with the centre stone in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. The halo accent stones are typically lab grown diamond for optical consistency and durability. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Halo moissanite is one of the most popular combinations among VYOR clients seeking maximum visual presence at an accessible price point.

The halo is one of the most enduring and most chosen engagement ring designs in fine jewellery, surrounding the centre stone with a ring of sparkling accents for amplified visual presence. At VYOR, every halo engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Halo Engagement Rings at VYOR

Halo is the engagement ring style of generous presence. By surrounding the centre stone with pavé accent diamonds, the halo amplifies the centre stone's visual size, adds significant sparkle around the setting, and produces a ring that reads as both traditional and statement. It has been one of the most chosen engagement ring designs for over two centuries and continues to evolve through modern interpretations of the classic technique.

Every signature halo design in our collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in any centre stone shape, with single or double halo options, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. Combinations with pavé band, cathedral profile, trilogy, and split shank are all represented. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom halo engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified centre diamond destined for a halo setting personally, and oversees colour and clarity matching of the halo accent stones to ensure the entire ring reads as a unified composition. Halo accent diamonds receive the same VYOR quality floor as larger stones (G colour or higher and VS1 clarity or higher), which is significantly above the industry standard for pavé accent stones and produces a noticeably brighter halo than rings using lower grade accents.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every halo design decision in the studio. She works with you on the halo stone size, the halo style (claw set, bezel set, or shared prong), the single or double halo choice, the centre stone shape pairing, the band integration, and the metal choice. The right halo is one where the proportion between centre and halo creates a composition rather than two competing elements.

How to Choose a Halo Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide

Halo design is fundamentally a study in proportion between centre and surround. Five things our designer walks through on every halo consultation at VYOR.

Halo stone size

Halo accent stones should be sized in proportion to the centre. A larger centre stone (2 carat and above) supports larger halo stones for visual balance. A smaller centre stone (1 carat and below) favours smaller halo stones to preserve proportion. Most VYOR halos use 0.01 to 0.03 carat halo stones, with size adjusted to suit the centre.

Halo style

Claw set halos (with small prongs holding each accent stone) read most traditional and allow maximum light entry. Bezel set halos (with each stone bezel set in metal) read most modern. Shared prong halos (where adjacent stones share prongs) read as continuous sparkle. The style affects both the visual character and the long term durability of the halo.

Single or double halo

Single halo is the most popular and the most balanced. Double halo (two concentric rings of pavé) produces maximum visual presence and significant additional carat weight, best suited to larger centre stones. The choice depends on aesthetic preference and total carat weight target.

Centre stone shape pairing

Round halo is the most classical. Oval halo is the most contemporary. Cushion halo bridges vintage and modern. Emerald, asscher, and princess halos produce geometric framing. Pear and marquise halos require careful design at the points. The halo should follow the centre stone outline with consistent spacing and proportion.

Band integration

Halo can stand alone with a plain band, or combine with pavé extending down the band for layered sparkle from centre to band. Plain band lets the halo read as the dominant feature. Pavé band continues the sparkle along the finger. Cathedral profile lifts the halo above the band for visual presence. The integration choice affects how the halo reads in proportion to the entire ring.

These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Halo rewards careful proportion between centre stone, halo, and overall ring design.

The VYOR Process

Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.

Consultation

A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.

Design

Once your stone and setting direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element (halo size, halo style, centre setting, band width, finish, metal) before crafting begins.
