Everything you need to know about the bezel setting

Bezel FAQs

What is a bezel set engagement ring?

A bezel setting is a style of engagement ring where the centre stone is surrounded by a thin, continuous metal rim that grips the stone around its entire perimeter. The bezel rim sits flush against the girdle of the diamond, holding it securely without prongs. Bezel is one of the oldest setting techniques in jewellery, dating back thousands of years, and has experienced a major modern revival as one of the most sought after contemporary engagement ring styles. Bezel settings produce a sleek, minimalist silhouette and offer the highest level of stone protection of any setting style.

What is the difference between a full bezel and half bezel setting?

A full bezel surrounds the stone with a continuous metal rim around the entire perimeter. A half bezel surrounds only two opposing sides of the stone, leaving the other two sides exposed. Full bezel provides maximum stone protection and a fully framed look. Half bezel allows more light to enter the stone (slightly increasing brilliance) and shows more of the stone's natural outline. East west half bezel settings, where the bezel sits across the top and bottom of an oval or elongated stone, are particularly popular in modern engagement ring design.

Is a bezel setting more secure than a claw setting?

Yes. A bezel setting is the most secure setting style available in fine jewellery. Because the metal rim surrounds the entire perimeter of the stone, there are no exposed prongs to bend, break, or catch on clothing, and no points of impact on the stone itself. Bezel settings are the standard recommendation for clients with active lifestyles, manual occupations, or those who prefer not to remove their ring during everyday activities.

Does a bezel setting reduce the diamond's sparkle?

Slightly, but the difference is rarely noticeable in person. Because the bezel rim covers a small portion of the stone's perimeter, slightly less light enters the diamond from the sides compared to a claw setting. However, the vast majority of light enters and exits through the table (top) and pavilion (bottom) of the stone, which a bezel does not obstruct. Modern bezel settings are designed with low profile rims that maximise side light entry, and well cut diamonds in well crafted bezels show excellent brilliance.

What diamond shapes work best with a bezel setting?

Bezel suits every diamond shape and is particularly flattering on certain cuts. Oval, emerald, and cushion bezels are currently the most popular, with the smooth bezel rim complementing the curved or geometric outline of these shapes. Round brilliant bezels produce a clean, modern silhouette that has become a signature of contemporary engagement ring design. Pear, marquise, and princess can also be bezel set, though the points and corners of these shapes require careful bezel design to protect the most vulnerable areas.

Is a bezel setting suitable for active lifestyles?

Yes. Bezel is the most recommended setting style for clients with active or hands on lifestyles, including medical professionals, tradespeople, athletes, and parents of young children. Because the metal rim protects the entire perimeter of the stone, the risk of catching the setting on clothing, equipment, or hair is minimal, and the stone itself is protected from impact. Many clients who want to wear their engagement ring continuously, without removing it during sports or work, choose bezel for exactly this reason.

Can a bezel set engagement ring be resized?

Yes, in most cases. The band of a bezel set ring can be resized using standard techniques. However, depending on the bezel construction and how it integrates with the band, complex resizing may require partial reconstruction of the setting. Every VYOR engagement ring is designed with resizing in mind from the start, and we offer complimentary resizing within the first 60 days regardless of setting style. Our master jewellers in Perth handle resizing of any VYOR bezel ring in house.

Does VYOR offer bezel engagement rings in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR bezel engagement ring design is available in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Bezel set moissanite produces a particularly clean, modern silhouette and is one of the most popular combinations among VYOR clients seeking a contemporary aesthetic at an accessible price point.

The bezel setting is the oldest setting technique in fine jewellery and one of the most sought after contemporary engagement ring styles. At VYOR, every bezel engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Bezel Engagement Rings at VYOR

Bezel is the engagement ring style of considered modernism. By replacing prongs with a continuous metal rim, the bezel produces a clean, architectural silhouette that reads as both timeless and unmistakably contemporary. The setting also delivers the highest level of stone security of any style, making bezel the natural choice for clients who want an engagement ring built for daily wear over a lifetime.

Every signature bezel design in our collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in any diamond shape, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. Both full bezel and half bezel configurations are represented. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom bezel engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified diamond destined for a bezel setting personally, examining cut performance, inclusion placement, and colour grading to ensure the stone reads beautifully through the bezel's restrained framing. Bezel reveals the stone's natural quality directly, with no facet pattern from prongs to distract or hide imperfections, which is why stone selection matters as much for bezel as for any other setting style.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every bezel design decision in the studio. She works with you on the full bezel versus half bezel choice, the bezel height and rim thickness, the metal finish (polished, matte, brushed), the band integration (knife edge, comfort fit, tapered), and the relationship between the bezel rim and the stone shape. The right bezel for an engagement ring is one that protects the stone without overpowering its outline.

How to Choose a Bezel Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide

Bezel design is more nuanced than it first appears. Small differences in rim height, metal thickness, and band integration produce dramatically different finished rings. Five things our designer walks through on every bezel consultation at VYOR.

Full bezel or half bezel

The first decision is whether to surround the stone completely or partially. Full bezel produces the most dramatic and the most secure silhouette, fully framing the stone. Half bezel produces a more open look, allowing more light into the stone and showing more of its natural outline. East west half bezel (with the bezel rim across the top and bottom of an elongated stone) is currently the most popular contemporary bezel configuration.

Bezel height and rim thickness

A low bezel sits close to the stone with minimal metal showing, producing a refined, contemporary look. A high bezel projects above the stone for a bolder, more architectural statement. Rim thickness affects both visual weight and stone protection. Our designer guides each client through the bezel proportion that suits the stone shape and the wearer's hand.

Stone shape compatibility

Every shape works in a bezel, but each shape requires specific bezel design. Oval and emerald bezels follow the stone's outline with smooth curves or clean angles. Round and cushion bezels produce the cleanest circular and softly square silhouettes. Pear, marquise, and princess bezels must include extra reinforcement at the points or corners to protect the most vulnerable edges.

Metal selection

Bezel settings make the metal itself a major visual element. Platinum and white gold produce a cool, contemporary frame around the stone. Yellow gold produces a warm, vintage inflected look with strong contrast against the diamond. Rose gold produces a romantic, distinctive frame that has become particularly popular for modern bezel designs. Two tone bezels (yellow gold rim with white gold band, or platinum bezel with rose gold band) are also available on custom designs.

Band integration

The band of a bezel ring should feel like a natural extension of the bezel itself. Knife edge bands produce a sharp, contemporary line. Comfort fit bands round the inside for everyday wear. Tapered bands narrow toward the back of the finger for an elegant silhouette. Wider bands hold their own against bolder bezels; thinner bands favour minimalist, low profile bezels.

These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Bezel is one of the most considered setting styles in fine jewellery, and every element is part of the choice.
